TX7HEN the power and splendour of the family of ' ' David were failing, and darkness was falling on. the Church, and religious men were fighting against dismay and distrust, then the Prophets foretold that the kingdom of the saints should one time be restored; and that, though its glories were then setting, a morrow would come in due course, and that a morrow without an evening. Has this promise yet been fulfilled or no ? and if fulfilled, in what sense fulfilled ? Many persons think it has not yet been fulfilled at all, and is to be fulfilled in some future dispensation or millennium; and many think that it has indeed been fulfilled, yet not literally, but spiritually and figuratively; or, in other words, that the promised reign of Christ upon earth has been nothing more than the influence of the Gospel over the souls of men, the triumphs of Divine Grace, the privileges enjoyed by faith, and the conversion of the elect. On the contrary, I would say that the prophecies in question have in their substance been fulfilled literally, and in the present Dispensation; and, if so, we need no figurative and no future fulfilment. Not that there may not be both a figurative and a future accomplishment besides; but these will be over and above, if they take place, and do not interfere with the direct meaning of the sacred text and its literal fulfilment. Excerpt from The Day Dawn and the Rain: And Other Sermons The following Sermons have been given to the press chiefly for the sake of those whom the author was ao customed to address by the living voice, and whom he can, at present, reach but seldom through that means. His purpose will be served if the volume helps them in the way of remembrance, and more than served if, through God's blessing, it shall prove of any use beyond their circle. Most of the Sermons, though not all, have been preached, and the exception is referred to in order to account for some of them exceeding the limits which are ordinarily assigned to spoken discourse. The sub jects have not been selected with any attempt at unity in the illustration of Christian doctrine or duty. An effort has rather been made to secure a variety of topics. When human knowledge and life are Spreading out into ever wider circuits, the Christian ministry must seek to show itself a debtor to men of every class and char acter, and must endeavor to prove that there is no de partment of thought or action which cannot be touched by that Gospel which is the manifold wisdom of God. The more we study the way of God's commandments, the more shall we find it as broad as his other works, and increasingly rich to meet all the developments of human nature. At the same time, it is hoped that theunity sought to be indicated by beginning and ending the volume with Christ Jesus, is not merely and that, whatever may be the theme, it will be seen and felt to base itself on that One Foundation, and to strive, though all imperfectly, after the excellency of his knowledge. Excerpt from The Great Problem: A Sermon for Every Sunday and Feast Day in the Year The Great Problem for each one of us to solve is: How shall I travel along the journey of life that I may attain the happiness of Eternal Life? The solution of this problem is attempted in these short sermons. In a few words the solution is: Avoid evil and do good. Although only the first sermon is on The Great Problem and most of the others on subjects suggested by the Gospels of the different Sundays, still all have the same end in view and the same central idea pervades the various sermons. Most of them are "Five-Minute Sermons" for early Masses; some, however, are longer and would consume fifteen minutes or more in their delivery. If necessary, the short sermons could be developed into long ones, and most of the longer ones (v.g. by taking one point) could readily be shortened to "Five-Minute Sermons." In these sermons, no attempt has been made to be eloquent. The aim of the author was to tell the truth clearly and clothe the important old subjects in plain language that would be easily understood.
