Music in Spain During the Eighteenth Century
Author: Malcolm Boyd
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521481397
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
Traditional musicology has tended to see the Spanish eighteenth century as a period of decline, but this 1998 volume shows it to be rich in interest and achievement. Covering stage genres, orchestral and instrumental music and vocal music (both sacred and secular), it brings together the results of research on such topics as opera, musical instruments, the secular cantata and the villancico and challenges received ideas about how Italian and Austrian music of the period influenced (or was opposed by) Spanish composers and theorists. Two final chapters outline the presence of Spanish musical sources in the New World.

The History of Courts and Procedure in Medieval Canon Law
Author: Wilfried Hartmann
Publisher: CUA Press
ISBN: 0813229049
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 521
Book Description
By the end of the thirteenth century, court procedure in continental Europe in secular and ecclesiastical courts shared many characteristics. As the academic jurists of the Ius commune began to excavate the norms of procedure from Justinian's great codification of law and then to expound them in the classroom and in their writings, they shaped the structure of ecclesiastical courts and secular courts as well. These essays also illuminate striking differences in the sources that we find in different parts of Europe. In northern Europe the archives are rich but do not always provide the details we need to understand a particular case. In Italy and Southern France the documentation is more detailed than in other parts of Europe but here too the historical records do not answer every question we might pose to them. In Spain, detailed documentation is strangely lacking, if not altogether absent. Iberian conciliar canons and tracts on procedure tell us much about practice in Spanish courts. As these essays demonstrate, scholars who want to peer into the medieval courtroom, must also read letters, papal decretals, chronicles, conciliar canons, and consilia to provide a nuanced and complete picture of what happened in medieval trials. This volume will give sophisticated guidance to all readers with an interest in European law and courts.

Domenico Scarlatti Adventures
Author: Massimiliano Sala
Publisher: Ut Orpheus
ISBN:
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 482
Book Description
While the publication of both single- and multi-author studies of composers in their anniversary years has become a predictable part of today's musicological landscape, such works still have their uses. If this is less apparent in the case of some of the biggest names, where suspicions of overkill or 'cashing in' may well be raised, the practice can be more readily justified for that vast majority of less celebrated -- and commercially less attractive -- composers. Marking anniversaries in such a way can give them a better chance to have their voices heard, and can act as a spur to activities on a larger scale.Scarlatti research has often been carried out in relatively isolated pockets, defined by very different epistemological values, and often enough marked by strong polemics between various parties. The lack of certain knowledge and agreed priorities can be enticing, but it can also produce mutual frustrations. In the light of such factors, the present collection could not offer, and is not intended to offer, a comprehensive survey of Scarlatti research; rather, we present a series of case studies, covering not just the magnificent corpus of keyboard sonatas, but other genres and aspects as well. The title reflects not just the feeling of adventure that seems to animate the sonatas, but also the fact that a certain intrepid spirit is required when approaching any aspect of the world of Scarlatti.

Canonical Collections of the Early Middle Ages (ca. 400-1140)
Author: Lotte Kéry
Publisher: CUA Press
ISBN: 9780813209180
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
Contains a bibliographical survey of the chronological and systematic canonical collections in the Latin West from the beginnings of Christianity to Gratian's Decretum (ca. 1140). Dr. Kéry not only has compiled a catalogue of early medieval canonistic manuscripts, but has included valuable information about them. For each collection she has described its type and contents, the time and place of compilation, and, when, possible, its author. Full bibliographies have been provided for each collection, arranged in chronological order. Scholars will find her work particularly useful since she has also noted where scholars have differed and where their opinions may be found. Special attention has been paid to the numerous recensions of the collections. She has given a separate entry for important recensions and has lists of fragments and abbreviated forms of the collections.
