Book Description
The combination of Space-Time (ST) coding and Continuous-Phase Modulation (CPM) produces a low power, energy efficient communication scheme suitable for wireless transmission. Space-time coding increases the reliability of transmission, and continuous-phase modulation (CPM) has the potential to provide considerable energy savings. CPM is a modulation technique that involves the transmission of a signal with continuous-phase and a constant envelope, where the continuous-phase property produces a very bandwidth efficient signal, and the constant-envelope property enables non linear (and thus energy efficient) signal amplification. The ST-CPM code is of special interest for wireless sensors because in the wireless sensor network environment energy consumption is highly constrained. The combination of ST codes and CPM is non-trivial and thus ST-CPM codes based upon block-based orthogonal and diagonal signal matrices are presented. These codes are forms the basis of a distributed ST-CPM code. The distributed ST codes are designed to operate in wireless networks containing a large set of nodes, of which only a small a priori unknown subset will be active at any time. The devised distributed ST-CPM scheme combines the ST-CPM code with a diagonal signaling matrix, (commonly assigned to all relay nodes) with signature vectors(uniquely assigned to nodes). The energy consumption of the proposed distributed ST-CPM scheme is compared with that of a distributed ST linear modulation (LM) scheme. The distributed ST-CPM scheme is shown to outperform the distributed ST-LM scheme for all but short-range transmission. Finally, a serially concatenated code for ST-CPM is proposed. The concatenated code consists of the diagonal signalling matrix as the inner code, and a class of double parity check (DPC) codes as the outer code. The resulting concatenated codes that are formed from the ST-CPM code and a DPC code are shown to provide performance close to capacity, and to provide performanc.

L2-orthogonal Space-time Code Design for Continuous Phase Modulation

L2-orthogonal Space-time Code Design for Continuous Phase Modulation PDF Author: Matthias Hesse

Book Description
Orthogonal Space-Time block codes (STBC) have been a popular way to implement wireless communications systems with full diversity and simple decoupled maximum-likelihood decoding. However, all these codes rely on pointwise orthogonality which leads to a well-known degradation of data rate for more than two antennas. In this thesis, we introduce the concept of L2-orthogonality for non-linear Space-Time codes (STC). Our approach generalizes code design based on pointwise orthogonality. Hence, we are able to derive new codes with the same advantages as pointwise orthogonal STBC, i.e. low decoding complexity and diversity gain. At the same time, we are no longer limited by the restrictions of pointwise orthogonal codes, namely the reduction in data rate. Actually, we show how to construct full rate codes for any arbitrary number of transmit antennas. More precisely, a family of codes for continuous phase modulation (CPM) is detailed. The L2-orthogonality of these codes is ensured by a bank of phase correction functions which maintains the phase continuity but also introduces frequency offsets. We prove that these codes achieve full diversity and have full rate. Moreover, these codes don't put any restriction on the CPM parameters.

Even the classical concept of cellular networks is changing and new technologies are evolving to replace it. To reflect these new trends, Advanced Wireless Communications & INTERNET builds upon the previous volumes, enhancing the existing chapters, and including a number of new topics. Systematically guiding readers from the fundamentals through to advanced areas, each chapter begins with an introductory explanation of the basic problems and solutions followed with an analytical treatment in greater detail. The most important aspects of new emerging technologies in wireless communications are comprehensively covered including: next generation Internet; cloud computing and network virtualization; economics of utility computing and wireless grids and clouds. This gives readers an essential understanding of the overall environment in which future wireless networks will be operating. Furthermore, a number of methodologies for maintaining the network connectivity, by using tools ranging from genetic algorithms to stochastic geometry and random graphs theory, and a discussion on percolation and connectivity, are also offered. The book includes a chapter on network formation games, covering the general models, knowledge based network formation games, and coalition games in wireless ad hoc networks. Book Description
It is well understood that multiple antennas can be used to effectively combat the fading in wireless links and increase the channel capacity by exploiting the spatial diversity. This dissertation addresses two main techniques to approach the increased capacity: space-time coding/modulation and iterative decoding. For space-time coding we proposed a systematic and closed form construction of complex orthogonal space-time block codes of rates (k + 1)/(2 k) for 2 k or 2 k & minus; 1 transmit antennas, where k is any positive integer. The rates of our construction are the maximum rates for complex orthogonal designs without linear processing. Furthermore, another closed form construction is proposed when the number of transmit antennas is a multiple of 4, where the delay size is only half of the designs known previously. This dissertation also presented a new recursive space-time trellis codes design from differential encoding, which can be applied to serially concatenated system to achieve turbo gain through iterative decoding. We proposed a new design criterion to obtain the recursive trellis with larger error event length, which makes it possible to increase the performance by careful design of the STBC mapped to the states. By using the new criterion we developed a class of recursive space-time trellis with number of states M 2 for any size of constellation M. For the application of iterative decoding in MIMO system, we presented an iterative decoding/demodulation technique for an orthogonal space-time coded continuous-phase modulation system. By taking advantage of the orthogonal structure, the complexity of extrinsic information extraction can be significantly reduced at each iteration. We also investigated the concatenation of a low density generator matrix code as an outer encoder and a recursive space time trellis code as an inner coder to increase the system performance.

Coded Modulation Systems

Coded Modulation Systems PDF Author: John B. Anderson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0306477920
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 494

Book Description
Coded Modulation Systems is an introduction to the subject of coded modulation in digital communication. It is designed for classroom use and for anyone wanting to learn the ideas behind this modern kind of coding. Coded modulation is signal encoding that takes into account the nature of the channel over which it is used. Traditional error correcting codes work with bits and add redundant bits in order to correct transmission errors. In coded modulation, continuous time signals and their phases and amplitudes play the major role. The coding can be seen as a patterning of these quantities. The object is still to correct errors, but more fundamentally, it is to conserve signal energy and bandwidth at a given error performance. The book divides coded modulation into three major parts. Trellis coded modulation (TCM) schemes encode the points of QAM constellations; lattice coding and set-partition techniques play major roles here. Continuous-phase modulation (CPM) codes encode the signal phase, and create constant envelope RF signals. The partial-response signaling (PRS) field includes intersymbol interference problems, signals generated by real convolution, and signals created by lowpass filtering. In addition to these topics, the book covers coding techniques of several kinds for fading channels, spread spectrum and repeat-request systems. The history of the subject is fully traced back to the formative work of Shannon in 1949. Full explanation of the basics and complete homework problems make the book ideal for self-study or classroom use.
