Symplectic Geometry and Analytical Mechanics

Symplectic Geometry and Analytical Mechanics PDF Author: P. Libermann
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9789027724380
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 554

Book Description
Approach your problems from the right end It isn't that they can't see the solution. and begin with the answers. Then one day, It is that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father 'The Hermit Clad in Crane Feathers' Brown 'The point of a Pin'. in R. van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thouglit to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sci ences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in re gional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homo topy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces.

Family Farming and the Worlds to Come

Family Farming and the Worlds to Come PDF Author: Jean-Michel Sourisseau
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9401793581
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 357

Book Description
What is family farming? How can it help meet the challenges confronting the world? How can it contribute to a sustainable and more equitable development? Not only is family farming the predominant form of agriculture around the world, especially so in developing countries, it is also the agriculture of the future. By declaring 2014 the “International Year of Family Farming,” the United Nations has placed this form of production at the center of debates on agricultural development. These debates are often reduced to two opposing positions. The first advocates the development of industrial or company agriculture, supposedly efficient because it follows industrial processes for market-oriented mass production. The second promotes the preservation of family farming with its close links between family and farm. The authors of this book wish to enrich the debates by helping overcome stereotypes – which often manifest through the use of terms such as “small-scale farming, subsistence farming, peasant, etc.” Research work has emphatically demonstrated the great adaptability of family farming systems and their ability to meet the major challenges of tomorrow but it has also not overlooked their limitations. The authors explore the choices facing society and possible development trajectories at national and international levels, and the contribution that agriculture will have to make. They call for a recommitment of public policies in favor of family farming in developing countries and stress the importance of planning actions targeted at and tailored to the family character of agricultural models. But, above all, they highlight the need to overcome strictly sectoral rationales, by placing family farming at the core of a broader economic and social project. This book is the result of a collaborative effort led by CIRAD and encapsulates three decades of research on family farming. It will interest researchers, teachers and students, and all those involved in national and international efforts for the development of countries in the South.

Fractal Geometry and Applications: A Jubilee of Benoit Mandelbrot

Fractal Geometry and Applications: A Jubilee of Benoit Mandelbrot PDF Author: Benoit B. Mandelbrot Michel L. Lapidus Machiel Van Frankenhuysen
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 9780821868485
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 724

Book Description
This volume offers an excellent selection of cutting-edge articles about fractal geometry, covering the great breadth of mathematics and related areas touched by this subject. Included are rich survey articles and fine expository papers. The high-quality contributions to the volume by well-known researchers--including two articles by Mandelbrot--provide a solid cross-section of recent research representing the richness and variety of contemporary advances in and around fractal geometry. In demonstrating the vitality and diversity of the field, this book will motivate further investigation into the many open problems and inspire future research directions. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in fractal geometry and its applications. This is a two-part volume. Part 1 covers analysis, number theory, and dynamical systems; Part 2, multifractals, probability and statistical mechanics, and applications.

Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN: 3034877919
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 381

Book Description
Since the publication of the first edition of this seminar book, the theory and applications of extremes and rare events have seen increasing interest. Laws of Small Numbers gives a mathematically oriented development of the theory of rare events underlying various applications. The new edition incorporates numerous new results on about 130 additional pages. Part II, added in the second edition, discusses recent developments in multivariate extreme value theory.

High-Dimensional Probability

High-Dimensional Probability PDF Author: Roman Vershynin
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108244548
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
High-dimensional probability offers insight into the behavior of random vectors, random matrices, random subspaces, and objects used to quantify uncertainty in high dimensions. Drawing on ideas from probability, analysis, and geometry, it lends itself to applications in mathematics, statistics, theoretical computer science, signal processing, optimization, and more. It is the first to integrate theory, key tools, and modern applications of high-dimensional probability. Concentration inequalities form the core, and it covers both classical results such as Hoeffding's and Chernoff's inequalities and modern developments such as the matrix Bernstein's inequality. It then introduces the powerful methods based on stochastic processes, including such tools as Slepian's, Sudakov's, and Dudley's inequalities, as well as generic chaining and bounds based on VC dimension. A broad range of illustrations is embedded throughout, including classical and modern results for covariance estimation, clustering, networks, semidefinite programming, coding, dimension reduction, matrix completion, machine learning, compressed sensing, and sparse regression.

Stellar Pulsations

Stellar Pulsations PDF Author: J.C. Suárez
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642296297
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 285

Book Description
Analyses of photometric time series obtained from the MOST, CoRoT and Kepler space missions were presented at the 20th conference on Stellar Pulsations (Granada, September 2011). These results are leading to a re-appraisal of our views on stellar pulsation in some stars and posing some new and unexpected challenges. The very important and exciting role played by innovative ground-based observational techniques, such as interferometric measurements of giant pulsating stars and high-resolution spectroscopy in the near infrared, is also discussed. These Proceedings are distinguished by the format of the conference, which brings together a variety of related but different topics not found in other meetings of this nature.
