Persian has a deceptively small repertoire of about 160 single word verbs wich belies an intricate system of light verb constructions (LVC). A sophisticated verbal system results from this small set of light verb construction (LVC). A sophisticated verbal system results from this small set of light verbs. The LVs combine with an open set of preverbs (PV) to produce new verbal expressions. The meaning of the whole is more than the sum of the meaning of its parts. The objective of the current study is to investigate the mechanisms that regulate the meaning of LVCs. We introduce the idea of islands, where a cluster a LVCs express similar verbal notions using the same LV and a strict class of PVs. This study sheds light on the organization of highly structured verbal semantic space of Persian and opens a window from wich we can study fundamental properties of human languages and conceptual systems : productivity, compositionality, polysemy, and the construction of composite expressions.

This volume examines the syntactic variation of complex events, complex predicates and multi-verb constructions within a single clause where the clause is view as representing a single event, studying their semantics and syntax within functional, cognitive and constructional frameworks, to arrive at a better understanding of their cross linguistic behaviour and how they resonate in syntax. These constructions manifest considerable variability in cross-linguistic comparisons of complex predicate formation. In European languages, for example, typically one of the verbs in a verb-verb construction highlights a phase of an underspecified event while the matrix verb specifies the actual event. In contrast, serial verbs require each verb to provide a sub-event dimension within a complex event that is viewed holistically as unitary in syntax. The notion of light verb constructions has been traditionally related to the ‘insignificance’ of the verb, which is described as a grammatical item only codifying TAM system and φ-features, whereas the whole predicative content is thought to be conveyed by the noun. This book deals with the light verb constructions as instances of complex verbs, intended as multi-predicational but monoclausal structures. This allows to deepen the actual verb lightness, the effective noun predicativity, as well as their effect on the cohesion of the construction.
