Selected Writings

Selected Writings PDF Author: Thomas Aquinas
Publisher: Penguin UK
ISBN: 0141908181
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 1279

Book Description
In his reflections on Christianity, Saint Thomas Aquinas forged a unique synthesis of ancient philosophy and medieval theology. Preoccupied with the relationship between faith and reason, he was influenced both by Aristotle's rational world view and by the powerful belief that wisdom and truth can ultimately only be reached through divine revelation. Thomas's writings, which contain highly influential statements of fundamental Christian doctrine, as well as observations on topics as diverse as political science, anti-Semitism and heresy, demonstrate the great range of his intellect and place him firmly among the greatest medieval philosophers.

Selected Essays

Selected Essays PDF Author: Oscar W. Firkins
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 081666062X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
Selected Essays was first published in 1933. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Professor Firkins' reputation as a writer whose work combines the qualities of thought and style, of penetrating criticism and epigrammatic wit, is amply upheld by these seventeen essays. The volume opens with "Man: A Character Sketch," which Christopher Morley has described as a "brilliant essay in spiritual anthropology." Emerson and Howells, on both of whom Mr. Firkins was a recognized authority, are each the subject of an essay. Glimpses of the author's boyhood and of his remarkable mother are given in "Undepicted America," which is the development of an original theory concerning American letters. In "The Irresponsible Power of Realism" the author flays some modern tendencies in literature and in "The Sermon on the Mount" he sets forth the basic principles of his humanistic religious views. A few of these essays are here published for the first time. Most of them, however, have been selected as representative of Mr. Firkins' best published work in the field of the critical essay.

The Selected Writings of Maurice O’Connor Drury

The Selected Writings of Maurice O’Connor Drury PDF Author: Maurice O’Connor Drury
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1474256384
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 473

Book Description
Maurice O'Connor Drury was among Wittgenstein's first students after his return to Cambridge in 1929. The subsequent course of Drury's life and thought was to be enormously influenced by his teacher, from his decision to become a doctor to his later work in psychiatry. The Selected Writings of Maurice O'Connor Drury brings together the best of his lectures, conversations, and letters on philosophy, religion and medicine. Central to the collection is the Danger of Words, the 1973 text described by Ray Monk as 'the most truly Wittgensteinian book published by any of Wittgenstein's students'. Through notes on conversations with Wittgenstein, letters to a student of philosophy and correspondence of almost 30 years with Rush Rhees, Drury gives shape to what he had learned from Wittgenstein. Whether discussing methods of philosophy, Simone Weil or the power of hypnosis, he makes fascinating excursions into the bearing of Wittgenstein's thought on philosophy and the practice of medicine and psychiatry. With an introduction presenting a new biography of Drury, analysing the relationship between him and Wittgenstein, The Selected Writings of Maurice O'Connor Drury features previously unpublished archival sources. Beautifully written and carefully selected, each piece reveals the impact of Wittgenstein's teachings, shedding light on the friendship and thinking of one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century.

The Selected Letters of Alice Meynell

The Selected Letters of Alice Meynell PDF Author: Damian Atkinson
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443863564
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 445

Book Description
The Catholic convert and women of letters Alice Meynell (1847–1922) ranks as a sophisticated essayist and poet of the late Victorian period and the early twentieth century. She had the advantage of an educated father and a musical mother who spent much of their early time with the family visiting Europe, especially Italy. Alice’s father was a friend of Dickens and her mother was admired by Dickens. Alice and her sister Elizabeth, later the famed artist Lady Butler, were educated privately and more so by their travels. This background gave Alice a great interest in art, music, poetry and literature. Her conversion to Catholicism in 1868 was the rock of her existence and coloured her entire life. Alice and her convert husband Wilfrid were very involved in the journalistic world as she was a contributor to the Scots / National Observer, Dublin Review, Tablet, Athenaeum, Speaker, Spectator, and the Magazine of Art. Alice was also an important unsigned contributor to the Pall Mall Gazette ‘Wares of Autolycus’ column for many years. Together Wilfrid and Alice edited and wrote for their own illustrated monthly Merry England from 1883–95. Contributors included Alice’s close friend Katharine Tynan, Coventry Patmore, Andrew Lang, and Francis Thompson, whose “The Hound of Heaven” was first published by them. They also managed the Weekly Register from 1881–98. The two journals kept Alice very busy as did her large family. Alice’s letters show her literary work, both poetry and essays, and her relationship with John Lane, who published many of her books, an arrangement not always easy. She discusses her work with poets such as John Freeman and John Drinkwater, and her admiration for Coventry Patmore with the writer Frederick Page. She was obviously considered important for aspiring and established poets who sought her approbation. She visited America in late 1901 for a short lecture tour which was fairly successful but also gave her some lifelong friends. She supported women’s suffrage and marched, although she was against its militancy. Alice was ambivalent about the First World War and her final years were spent writing and editing anthologies.
