HMIS is an annual publication containing data on health medical personnel employed by the military departments within the Department of Defense. Data are submitted annually, as of the end of the fiscal year. The data, as submitted by the Army, Navy, and Air Force, have been consolidated to produce the statistics as presented in this publication. Formats 1-35 represent the active duty military (officer and enlisted) and civilian personnel. The remaining formats represent the reserve component personnel. The report includes comparison statistical data for the end of the fiscal year by requirements and authorization and assignments by corps level and selected specialties. Other formats present recruiting summaries, gains by program source, force strength projections, and extensive displays of rank, years of service, and primary duty specialties for medical and dental officers. Selected Manpower Statistics (SMS) is an annual publication that provides basic manpower data on active duty military, civilian, reserve components and retired military personnel of the Department of Defense. Although the focus of this publication is on summary data for the Department of Defense as a whole, in most instances the tables reflect associated component data for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. With a few exceptions, as noted on applicable tables, this issue of the SMS contains figures either for, or through Fiscal Year 1978. It should be noted that additional and/or more recent data of the type depicted by a number of tables in the SMS is available throughout the fiscal year on a quarterly or monthly basis.
