Selected Essays, Poems and Other Writings PDF Author: A. S. Byatt
Publisher: Penguin UK
ISBN: 0141958723
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 578

Book Description
The works collected in this volume provide an illuminating introduction to George Eliot's incisive views on religion, art and science, and the nature and purpose of fiction. Essays such as 'Evangelical Teaching' show her rejecting her earlier religious beliefs, while 'Woman in France' questions conventional ideas about female virtues and marriage, and 'Notes on Form in Art' sets out theories of idealism and realism that she developed further in Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda. It also includes selections from Eliot's translations of works by Strauss and Feuerbach that challenged many ideas about Christianity; excerpts from her poems; and reviews of writers such as Wollstonecraft, Goethe and Browning. Wonderfully rich in imagery and observations, these pieces reveal the intellectual development of this most challenging and rewarding of writers.

Book Description
Excerpt from Selected Essays on Literary Subjects I have heard, on what seems credible authority, that an eminent scholar, who, at the present moment, occupies the Chair of English Literature at one of our Universities, began a lecture on the same subject as that on which I have the honour of addressing you to night with these memorable words: Strictly speaking, Charles Dickens had no humour. I cannot promise you any observations of so startling and arrestn -a kind as that; I Shall confine myself to a much humbler, more ordinary, and more natural effort. You must pardon the egotism of a lively gratitude if the word I occurs Oftener in the course of my speech than I could Wish, for I can truly say that Charles Dickens has been to me, though I never knew him, nor even saw him, one of the very best friends that life has afforded, and best in the darkest hours. In that respect, I can only bracket him with Sir Walter Scott, there being this difference between the two cases, that Scott was to all of us an historical character, whereas some of us lived contemporaneously with part of Charles Dickens' life. He was a marked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Selected Essays Since the Reformation the progress and diffusion of knowledge have been both rapid and uninterrupted. The discovery of the art of printing and the mariner's compass, the introduction of the Baconian philosophy, and the application of steam to the mechanic arts, have done much to prepare the way for general education. Several important political events have contributed largely to the same end. I refer to the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the wars of Napoleon - the first resulting in the establishment of free government on our own shores, and the two latter in the breaking up of long-settled forms of tyranny and ecclesiastical usurpa tion, and all contributing to extend the belief that man kind ought to think for themselves. We can but mourn when we contemplate the bloodshed of revolutionary France; but may we not conceive that own that disastrous event had a powerful influence in undermining the foundations of venerable superstition, extending liberal principles, and promoting general knowledge? Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of English Essays (1600-1900) Of the word Essay it is necessary to say some thing, because at different times it has borne different meanings. Johnson's definition of it as a loose sally of the mind an irregular undigested piece covered its employment by authors to excuse shortcomings, and to disarm the critic in his examination of a work which boasted of no pretence to literature. Some such idea of admitted or implied failure in a worthy experiment adhered to Montaigne's use of the word in those Essaz's which were published in 1580. But the decay of this sense began in fact with this publication, although the author expressed his apology for being some thing fantastical For that very wandering from point to point which in Montaigne was a habit of mind, was developed by the English essayists of the eighteenth century into a deliberate study. Out of what Montaigne would have been only too pleased to call irregularity and want of finish they invented a literary quality which in Goldsmith rose to a perfection of carelessness in approaching and retreating from a subject. It was in another direction from that taken by Montaigne and his followers that Bacon enlarged the meaning of the word essay in literature. He applied it to his pieces not in the sense of an experiment but in the sense of a test or assay He weighed and examined his subjects one by one. With the grip of his intellect he clung to each separate subject as to a rock while he treated of it, refusing to dip to the invading wave of kindred ideas by which it was surrounded. In the dedica tion of his second edition of pieces to Prince Henry of Wales in 1612 he wrote of them as brief notes, set down rather significantly than curiously, which I have called Essays. The word is late, but the thing is ancient'. And he went on to point out that Seneca's epistles to Lucilius were, if read aright, nothing but essays.
