Seismic Isolation, Structural Health Monitoring, and Performance Based Seismic Design in Earthquake Engineering

Seismic Isolation, Structural Health Monitoring, and Performance Based Seismic Design in Earthquake Engineering PDF Author: Azer A. Kasimzade
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319931571
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 361

Book Description
This book features chapters based on selected presentations from the International Congress on Advanced Earthquake Resistance of Structures, AERS2016, held in Samsun, Turkey, from 24 to 28 October 2016. It covers the latest advances in three widely popular research areas in Earthquake Engineering: Performance-Based Seismic Design, Seismic Isolation Systems, and Structural Health Monitoring. The book shows the vulnerability of high-rise and seismically isolated buildings to long periods of strong ground motions, and proposes new passive and semi-active structural seismic isolation systems to protect against such effects. These systems are validated through real-time hybrid tests on shaking tables. Structural health monitoring systems provide rapid assessment of structural safety after an earthquake and allow preventive measures to be taken, such as shutting down the elevators and gas lines, before damage occurs. Using the vibration data from instrumented tall buildings, the book demonstrates that large, distant earthquakes and surface waves, which are not accounted for in most attenuation equations, can cause long-duration shaking and damage in tall buildings. The overview of the current performance-based design methodologies includes discussions on the design of tall buildings and the reasons common prescriptive code provisions are not sufficient to address the requirements of tall-building design. In addition, the book explains the modelling and acceptance criteria associated with various performance-based design guidelines, and discusses issues such as selection and scaling of ground motion records, soil-foundation-structure interaction, and seismic instrumentation and peer review needs. The book is of interest to a wide range of professionals in earthquake engineering, including designers, researchers, and graduate students.

2018 International Existing Building Code Handbook

2018 International Existing Building Code Handbook PDF Author: Chris Kimball
Publisher: McGraw Hill Professional
ISBN: 1260134792
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Renovate, repair, or retrofit existing buildings in complete compliance with the 2018 IEBCThis practical guide shows, step by step, how to apply the provisions of the 2018 International Existing Building Code® (IEBC) when performing repairs, change of occupancy retrofits, and seismic evaluations in buildings of all sizes. The book contains all the information you need to understand with the complex provisions in the code and apply them properly to meet structural safety requirements.2018 International Existing Building Code Handbook® opens with an overview of the IEBC and of permits, construction documents, and other administration requirements. It goes on to explain the three different project methods that can be followed under the IEBC—the prescriptive method, the work area method, and the performance compliance method. Throughout, flowcharts and illustrated examples clearly demonstrate the proper application of the code in real-world projects.•Fully aligns with the 2018 International Existing Building Code® •Covers prescriptive, work area, and performance compliance methods•Written by an ICC MCP who has conducted numerous seminars on the IEBC

Proceedings of Italian Concrete Days 2016

Proceedings of Italian Concrete Days 2016 PDF Author: Marco di Prisco
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319789368
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 557

Book Description
This book gathers the best peer-reviewed papers presented at the Italian Concrete Days national conference, held in Rome, Italy, on October 27-28, 2016. The conference topics encompass the aspects of design, execution, rehabilitation and control of concrete structures, with particular reference to theory and modeling, applications and realizations, materials and investigations, technology and construction techniques. The contributions amply demonstrate that today’s structural concrete applications concern not only new constructions, but more and more rehabilitation, conservation, strengthening and seismic upgrading of existing premises, and that requirements cover new aspects within the frame of sustainability, including environmental friendliness, durability, adaptability and reuse of works and / or materials. As such the book represents an invaluable, up-to-the-minute tool, providing an essential overview of structural concrete, as well as all new materials with cementitious matrices.

Rapid Visual Screening of Buildings for Potential Seismic Hazards: Supporting Documentation

Rapid Visual Screening of Buildings for Potential Seismic Hazards: Supporting Documentation PDF Author:
Publisher: Government Printing Office
ISBN: 9780160926754
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
The Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) handbook can be used by trained personnel to identify, inventory, and screen buildings that are potentially seismically vulnerable. The RVS procedure comprises a method and several forms that help users to quickly identify, inventory, and score buildings according to their risk of collapse if hit by major earthquakes. The RVS handbook describes how to identify the structural type and key weakness characteristics, how to complete the screening forms, and how to manage a successful RVS program.
