Deep seismiC sounding was proposed by G. A. Gamburtsev and developed under his guid ance during the period 1948-1955 at the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. During that period also, the first geophysical results concerning the deep structure of the earth's crust in several regions in Tien-Shan, the Pamir, and Turkmenia were observed. Beginning with 1956, the deep seismic sounding method has been used widely by geo physical research groups as well as by geophysical service organizations for regional studies in the USSR. Descriptions of this work have been given in reports by Yu. N. Godin, V. V. Fedynskii, D. N. Kazanli, and others. New variants of the deep seismic sounding method have been developed; continuous profiling (Yu. N. Godin, and others), and point soundings (N. N. Puzyrev, and others). Deep seismic soundings have been carried on outside of Russia also, and studies have been carried out on the use of the deep seismic sounding method in marine applications (E. I. Gal'perin, S. M. Zverev, 1. P. Kosminskaya, Yu. P. Neprochnov, and others). OVer the past decade, the deep seismic sounding method has joined the suite of geo physical studies as a highly detailed method for studying the earth's crust and upper mantle to depths of 50 to 100 km on land, and of 15 to 25 km in the deep oceans.

Electrical conductivity is a parameter which characterizes composition and physical state of the Earth's interior. Studies of the state equations of solids at high temperature and pressure indicate that there is a close relation be tween the electrical conductivity of rocks and temperature. Therefore, measurements of deep conductivity can provide knowledge of the present state and temperature of the Earth's crust and upper mantle matter. Infor mation about the temperature of the Earth's interior in the remote past is derived from heat flow data. Experimental investigation of water-containing rocks has revealed a pronounced increase of electrical conductivity in the temperature range D from 500 to 700 DC which may be attributed to the beginning of fractional melting. Hence, anomalies of electrical conductivity may be helpful in identitying zones of melting and dehydration. The studies of these zones are perspective in the scientific research of the mobile areas of the Earth's crust and upper mantle where tectonic movements, processes ofthe region al metamorphism and of forming mineral deposits are most intensive. Thus, in the whole set of research on physics of the Earth the studies of electrical conductivity of deep-seated rocks appear, beyond doubt, very important.

Variations in seismic Q are sensitive to a much greater extent than are seismic velocity variations on factors such as temperature, fluid content, and the movement of solid state defects in the earth. For that reason an understanding of Q and its variation with position in the earth and with time should provide information in earth's tectonic evolution, as well as on aspects of its internal structure. Progress in understanding Q has suffered from difficulty in obtaining reliable amplitude data at global and temporary stations. Moreover, laboratory determinations of Q, until recently, were most often made at frequencies much higher than those measured by seismologists for waves propagating through the earth. Recent advances in seismic station distribution and quality, as well as in methodology at both high and low fequencies, have greatly improved the quality of observational data available to seismologists from global stations. Concurrent advances have been made in measuring Q using laboratory samples at frequencies that pertain to the earth and in theoretical understanding of seismic wave attenuation. Papers of this volume present new information on Q in the earth from several perspectives: methodology, results from global and regional observations of both body and surface waves, laboratory measurements, and theoretical understanding. The editors believe that we have reached a new threshold in Q studies and that advances in data quality and methodology will spur increased interest in this difficult, but interesting field.
