Growers can plant soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.] with a grain drill or row crop planter, which can affect seed and weed control costs and yield. Farmers planted soybean with a grain drill in 0.19 m rows and a row crop planter in 0.38 and 0.76 m rows at recommended (420,000 seeds ha1) and reduced (321,000 seeds ha-1) seeding rates in two field-scale studies in New York to obtain agronomic information and conduct partial budget analyses to aid growers in future planter purchase decisions. Soybean intercepted more light in 0.19 (65-70%) compared with 0.76 m rows (50-55%) at flowering, despite lower early plant establishment (~70 and ~85%, respectively) at both locations. At the no-till location, soybean in 0.76 m rows compared with narrower rows had greater weed density at full pod stage (19.7 vs. 6.3 and 5.1 plants m-2) and biomass at harvest (13.7 vs. 6.6 and 7.3 g m-2), but similar yield (~3.30 Mg ha-1). At the chisel tillage location, soybean in 0.19 m rows at 420,000 seeds ha-1 yielded more (4.27 Mg ha-1) than other row spacing by seeding rate combinations (4.15 to 4.01 Mg ha-1). Partial budget analyses indicated that soybean in 0.19 m rows at 420,000 seeds ha-1 had ~$30 ha-1 increased profit compared with 0.76 m rows at 321,000 seeds ha-1. Partial budget analyses indicated that for farms without a grain drill the 4% yield advantage offsets costs of purchasing and owning a grain drill and added seed costs at present market and seed price.

Soybean growers in the northern latitudes of the United States plant the crop in a wide range of row spacings although there has been a shift toward wider rows (>50¬†cm) in some Upper Midwest states in the last 5¬†years. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of row spacing and seeding rate on the performance of soybean and to determine whether these management practices interact to influence soybean yield. A row spacing study was conducted at Aberdeen and Beresford, South Dakota, USA, in 2014 and 2015. The study had two row spacings (19 and 76¬†cm), four seeding rates (247,000, 333,500, 420,000, and 506,500¬†seeds¬†ha,àí1), and two soybean varieties at each location. Soybean had greater stand establishment in 19¬†cm rows (6,Äì10% higher) compared with 76¬†cm rows. Soybean in 19¬†cm rows yielded 0.8,Äì10% more than in 76¬†cm rows depending on the location or year. Seed yield increased with increasing seeding rate with the highest seeding rate of 506,000¬†seeds¬†ha,àí1 yielding greatest. The increase in seed yield due to the increase in seeding rate ranged from 3 to 7%. At each location, the longer duration soybean variety yielded higher than the shorter duration variety.

A large portion of irrigated soybean in Mississippi are planted on raised beds spaced 96.52 cm apart. There is recent interest in growing soybean in narrower rows. Previous research indicates that narrower row spacing can provide advantages over wider arrangements, including increased light interception, improved weed management and greater seed yield. Soybean was planted in 96.52 cm single rows, 96.52 cm twin rows and 50 cm rows on wide beds (200 cm) at three seeding rates. Canopy closure was monitored throughout the growing season. Soybean planted in narrow rows had consistently faster canopy closure than single rows at all site years. Similarly, there was a 10% to 13% seed yield advantage for the narrow row spacing over the single row spacing at each site year. With the introduction of novel technology, such as the twin row planter, comes equipment malfunction and/or misuse that could reduce seed yield. Producer decisions in the event of a planting/planter error can be challenging. The economic loss due to a planter error may vary by soil type due to differences in plant development. The purpose of this research is to determine the agronomic effects associated with multiple potential twin row planter errors on two distinct soil types across multiple maturity groups commonly found in Mississippi. Canopy closure of each planting error was monitored throughout the growing season. Seed yield was reduced by 9 to 18% when a whole twin row was missing compared to the untreated check at all site years.
