Book Description
Security is an all-encompassing term of art which is subject to diverse interpretations and understandings. It includes notions of protection against transnational threats, including terrorism, inter- and intra-state conflict, nuclear proliferation, forced migration, violation of women’s rights, climate change, etc. The papers in this collection provide fresh voices in the security debate, uniting scholars from different fields of law and philosophy to address normative gaps in interpretation, evolution and application. Part I considers calls for an expanded mandate for the UN Security Council and regional international organisations. Part II reviews innovations within the arena of international humanitarian law, including whether it is possible to balance human rights and humanitarian law standards in peacekeeping operations, responses to “voluntary human shielding”, and normative evolution in the removal of anti-personnel mines and the ban on cluster munitions. Part III embarks upon the realm of Ethics and Democracy: assessing the engagement of private soldiers and the legitimacy of targeted strikes pursuant to the “responsibility to prevent terrorism”. It also considers internal conflicts within the notion of “democratic security”, affirms the procedural guarantees of habeas corpus and non-refoulement as central elements of global justice, and calls for evaluation of gender equity as a measure of state fragility. Part IV confronts the global challenge of climate change as a security threat. Finally, Part V provides a practitioner’s perspective which discusses possible grounds for a gap between academics and security practitioners.

International Security and Gender
Author: Nicole Detraz
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0745663052
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 342
Book Description
What does it mean to be secure? In the global news, we hear stories daily about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, about domestic-level conflicts around the world, about the challenges of cybersecurity and social security. This broad list highlights the fact that security is an idea with multiple meanings, but do we all experience security issues in the same way? In this book, Nicole Detraz explores the broad terrain of security studies through a gender lens. Assumptions about masculinity and femininity play important roles in how we understand and react to security threats. By examining issues of militarization, peacekeeping, terrorism, human security, and environmental security, the book considers how the gender-security nexus pushes us to ask different questions and broaden our sphere of analysis. Including gender in our analysis of security challenges the primacy of some traditional security concepts and shifts the focus to be more inclusive. Without a full understanding of the vulnerabilities and threats associated with security, we may miss opportunities to address pressing global problems. Our society often expects men and women to play different roles, and this is no less true in the realm of security. This book demonstrates that security debates exhibit gendered understandings of key concepts, and whilst these gendered assumptions may benefit specific people, they are often detrimental to others, particularly in the key realm of policy-making.

Bezpieczeństwo ludzkie ludów tubylczych w Arktyce na przykładzie Samów. Wybrane zagadnienia
Author: AGNIESZKA SZPAK
Publisher: Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika
ISBN: 832313989X
Category : Arctic regions
Languages : en
Pages : 45
Book Description
Ogrom zagadnień i wątków zmusił autorkę do zawężenia tematyki, stąd podtytuł. […] Z recenzji wydawniczej prof. dr hab. Grażyny Michałowskiej

On the Frontlines
Author: Fionnuala Ni Aolain
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195396642
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
Gender oppression has been a feature of war and conflict throughout human history, yet until fairly recently, little attention was devoted to addressing the consequences of violence and discrimination experienced by women in post-conflict states. Thankfully, that is changing. Today, in a variety of post-conflict settings--the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Colombia, Northern Ireland --international advocates for women's rights have focused bringing issues of sexual violence, discrimination and exclusion into peace-making processes. In On the Frontlines, Fionnuala Ni Aolain, Dina Francesca Haynes, and Naomi Cahn consider such policies in a range of cases and assess the extent to which they have had success in improving women's lives. They argue that there has been too little success, and that this is in part a product of a focus on schematic policies like straightforward political incorporation rather than a broader and deeper attempt to alter the cultures and societies that are at the root of much of the violence and exclusions experienced by women. They contend that this broader approach would not just benefit women, however. Gender mainstreaming and increased gender equality has a direct correlation with state stability and functions to preclude further conflict. If we are to have any success in stabilizing failing states, gender needs to move to fore of our efforts. With this in mind, they examine the efforts of transnational organizations, states and civil society in multiple jurisdictions to place gender at the forefront of all post-conflict processes. They offer concrete analysis and practical solutions to ensuring gender centrality in all aspects of peace making and peace enforcement.
