Book Description
Excerpt from Secondary-School Mathematics, Vol. 2 This volume continues the work of Book I and completes the required work in most four-year high schools; namely, algebra through quadratic equations, and all of plane geometry. In addition it trains the pupil in the use of logarithms and trigonometry of the right triangle. These last two topics are taught as a direct consequence of the theory of exponents and of ratios in similar right triangles. With algebra through proportion and most of straight line geometry at the student's command, this book offers from the very beginning the greatest opportunities for the introduction of interesting problems which are impossible in the old plan of keeping algebra and geometry separate. The applied problems, involving a knowledge of technical terms in shop or in the work of household arts, are so arranged that their introduction is at the discretion of the teacher, this of course depending largely on the type of school in which the text is being used. Book Description
Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics, Vol. 2: Book II This book is intended to meet this demand for the second year of the introductory course. Algebra furnishes the material for the first half of the book, the second half being devoted to those topics of business arith metic which are appropriate to the student's maturity. The work in Book I has already shown the use of the formula in algebra and has furnished a large amount of material to which the formula can now properly be still further related. It is therefore natural to place algebra in the first half year and to make free use of it in the arithmetic that follows, unless the courses are carried along parallel to each other. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Junior Mathematics, Vol. 2 The nucleus of this book grew out of the author's experience as an instructor in mathematics in a large city high school, in teaching the first book of plane geometry without a text. Four years ago an outline of it was given by the author to the teachers under her supervision because no suitable text in experi mental geometry could be found. By way of further suggestion, one or two topics were expanded in more detail and discussed with the teachers. This book is the result of their urgent request for more. Since then, over a score of teachers have used the outline, and their unanimous opinion is that the pupils take an increased delight in mathematics of this kind. The author was in a position to observe the effects of teach ing it in various types of schools and found it most gratifying. Book Description
Excerpt from Durell's School Algebra, Vol. 2 The main Object in writing this school algebra has been to simplify principles and give them interest, by Showing more plainly, if possible, than has been done heretofore, the practical or common-sense reason for each step or process. For instance, at the outset it is Shown that new symbols are introduced into algebra not arbitrarily, but because of definite advantages in representing numbers. Each successive process is taken up for the sake of the economy or new power which it gives as compared with previous processes. Second-Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools PDF Author: George William Myers
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330027066
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
Excerpt from Second-Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools This book carries forward through the second high-school year the combined type of material and the plan of treatment of First-Year Mathematics. The two texts together cover the essentials of what is commonly required of all pupils in the first two years of secondary schools in this country, and include, in addition, the elementary notions of plane trigonometry through the solution of right triangles, as well as an introduction to some topics of formal algebra not usually treated in secondary texts. Each book constitutes a well-balanced and not over-heavy year of work. This material so arranged at the same time opens to the pupil a broader, richer, a more useful and therefore a more alluring field of ideas than do the two subjects of algebra and plane geometry treated separately. It is felt that the material and treatment of these books lays for the beginner a more stable foundation for future work than does the usual order of a year of formal algebra, followed by a year of formal demonstrative geometry, or of these subjects in the reverse order. This judgment, founded on our own experience, is confirmed by a recent extended inspection of schools abroad. In England as well as in Germany and France, the best secondary schools were seen to be using the methods of combined mathematics almost exclusively, with seeming advantage to their pupils. Second-Year Mathematics lays chief emphasis on geometry, as did the First-Year Mathematics on algebra. To take up the work of these texts then requires no abrupt departure from the order of subjects now prevailing in secondary curricula.
