Book Description
Early October 2013, an experienced hunter goes into a remote section of the New Jersey Pine Barrens alone ... and disappears. Five days later his pet cocker spaniel is found in his abandoned and unlocked SUV with the keys still dangling from the ignition. His wallet and cell phone lie undisturbed on the dashboard. For a solid week the authorities comb the forbidding woods but come up empty. Nine months later the case has gone cold. There have been no new leads in the deepening mystery. The ‘widow’ and her family are anxious to get closure and collect on the missing hunter’s sizeable life insurance policy. But the insurance company remains skeptical. Under pressure the company sends a small team back into the woods to conduct one final search for evidence of what may have happened to the missing man. The team includes Kelly Martin the insurance field investigator, her live-in boyfriend Danny Windsor who has scored a plum assignment with the local newspaper and Tom Banks, a well-known local guide and professional tracker. Also along are Park Ranger Randi Lee and the enigmatic FBI agent, Russell Shaw. Kelly’s brother Geoffrey is paired with Noah Parsons, a former Coast Guard commander to monitor the expedition remotely under the watchful glare of an incredulous NJ State Police Lieutenant and the growing irritation of an uncooperative cranberry farmer. Based in part on an actual event all signs point to something sinister as the search team runs into trouble from the start before sending them on an unexpected and dangerous adventure of their own. With a large payout hanging in the balance and a man’s fate lingering in mystery and doubt, every snapping twig, every falling leaf and every rustle of the wind will have your hair standing on edge.

Search Theory and Applications

Search Theory and Applications PDF Author: K. Haley

Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
The NATO Advanced Research Institute on Search Theory and Appli cations was held at the Hotel Algarve in Praia Da Rocha, Portugal, from March 26 through March 30, 1979, and was sponsored by the NATO Special Programme Panel on Systems Science. There were forty-one participants representing a wide range of backgrounds and interests. The purpose of the institute was to bring together people working in search theory and applications with potential users of search techniques to stimulate the increased application of recent ly developed search technology to civilian problems such as search and rescue, mineral exploration, surveillance, and fishing. Con versely, it was felt that by exposing search analysts to potential applications and new problems, they would be stimulated to develop new techniques for these applications and problems. The exchange of ideas and problems necessary to accomplish these goals was provided in the meeting workshops. There were three workshops, Search and Rescue, Exploration, and Surveillance and Fishing, each consisting of a small group of search analysts and potential users working together to define areas in which search theory and technology can be applied and to outline plans for im plementation. At the end of the conference, each working group submitted a report outlining possible areas of search applications and discussing problems which needed to be solved in order to im plement these applications.

Go Find PDF Author: Susan Purvis

ISBN: 153846022X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
Somewhere between hunting for gold in Latin America as a geologist and getting married to a new husband, thirty-three-year-old Susan Purvis loses her way. Susan comes to believe that a puppy and working on ski patrol at the last great ski town in Colorado will improve her life. When she learns about avalanches that bury people without warning, she challenges herself: “What if I teach a dog to save lives?” This quest propels her to train the best possible search dog, vowing to never leave anyone behind. With no clue how to care for a houseplant, let alone a dog, she chooses a five-week-old Labrador retriever, Tasha. With the face of a baby bear and the temperament of an NFL linebacker, Tasha constantly tests Susan’s determination to transform her into a rescue dog. Susan and Tasha jockey for alpha position as they pursue certification in avalanche, water, and wilderness recovery. Susan eventually learns to truly communicate with Tasha by seeing the world through her dog’s nose. As the first female team in a male-dominated search-and-rescue community, they face resistance at every turn. They won’t get paid even a bag of kibble for their efforts, yet they launch dozens of missions to rescue the missing or recover the remains of victims of nature and crime. Training with Tasha in the field to find, recover, and rescue the lost became Susan’s passion. But it was also her circumstance—she was in many ways as lost as anyone she ever pulled out of an avalanche or found huddled in the woods. “Lostness” doesn’t only apply to losing the trail. People can get lost in a relationship, a business, or a life. Susan was convinced that only happened to other people, until Tasha and a life in the mountains taught her otherwise.
