Book Description
A search for physics beyond the standard model in events with at least three leptons and any number of jets is presented. The data sample corresponds to 35 inverse picobarns of integrated luminosity in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. A number of exclusive multileptonic channels are investigated and standard model backgrounds are suppressed by requiring sufficient missing transverse energy, invariant mass inconsistent with that of the Z boson, or high jet activity. Control samples in data are used to ascertain the robustness of background evaluation techniques and to minimise the reliance on simulation. The observations are consistent with background expectations. These results constrain previously unexplored regions of supersymmetric parameter space.

Book Description
The standard model (SM) of particles and fields is a theory that has proven very accurate in the currently accessible collider energies. Nonetheless, the SM is theoretically incomplete in the sense that it leaves many questions and problems unanswered, for example, the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). The Higgs boson is introduced to the SM to provide a mechanism for electroweak symmetry breaking and masses to quarks and leptons. However, the introduction of the Higgs mechanism has the undesirable effect of introducing the hierarchy problem which is characterized by quadratically divergent contributions to the Higgs mass squared. Supersymmetry (SUSY) has been postulated as a way to solve the problem of the fine tuning of the Higgs self-interactions, and additionally to provide a possible mechanism for EWSB. The golden search channel for mSUGRA is the $\chi{^\pm}_{1} \chi^{0}_{2} \rightarrow 3\ell$ (three leptons) channel. It offers a reasonable signal $\sigma \ times BR$ with very small contributions from Standard Model backgrounds. This thesis, presents a search for chargino-neutralino production within the mSUGRA framework.

Book Description
Results are reported from a search for physics beyond the standard model in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, focusing on the signature with a single, isolated, high-transverse-momentum lepton (electron or muon), energetic jets, and large missing transverse momentum. The data sample comprises an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is motivated by models of new physics, including supersymmetry. The observed event yields are consistent with standard model backgrounds predicted using control samples obtained from the data. The characteristics of the event sample are consistent with those expected for the production of t t-bar and W +jets events. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the parameter space for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model.

Book Description
Our search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-sign same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2012. The analysis focuses on searches for a kinematic edge in the invariant mass distribution of the oppositesign same-flavor lepton pair and for final states with an on-shell Z boson. Furthermore, the observations are consistent with expectations from standard model processes and are interpreted in terms of upper limits on the production of supersymmetric particles.

Search Strategies for New Physics at the LHC

Book Description
The LHC is in the frontline of experimental searches for New Physics beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Its power is accompanied by no smaller challenges in analyzing and interpreting its results. In this thesis I explore ways to parameterize new physics phenomena, design search strategies that are sensitive to them, and interpret experimental results in general new physics contexts. In particular, I discuss interpretations of the first ATLAS analysis for supersymmetry with 70/nb of integrated luminosity. I also carry a careful investigation of comprehensive search strategies for new physics with jets and missing energy signatures, and estimate the sensitivity bounds of the 7 TeV LHC to new colored particles decaying to jets and and a neutral particle that escapes detection. Finally, I discuss the implications of the recent LHC excesses hinting to a Higgs boson with mass in the range 142-147 GeV. If confirmed, this range for the Higgs mass will be an important evidence for Split Supersymmetry. I work out the phenomenological predictions of this scenario that will be tested in the very near future by a variety of experiments, including direct and indirect dark matter detection, EDM experiments searching for CP violation and the 7 TeV run of the LHC.

Book Description
Many theoretical models of physics beyond the Standard Model provide a signature of two photons and large missing transverse energy [Special characters omitted.] in the final state. This search was performed using 36 pb[superscript -1] of proton-proton collision data at [Squared root of s] = 7 TeV. The candidate events are determined by comparing the [Special characters omitted.] distribution for events with two photons and at least one hadronic jet with the [Special characters omitted.] T distribution from QCD and electroweak processes that have no true missing transverse energy. 1.2 ± 0.8 background events were expected, with one event observed. This result was interpreted in two theoretical models beyond the Standard Model. The cross section for General Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking is given an upper limit between 0.3 pb and 1.1 pb. Universal Extra Dimensions has been excluded for all values of 1/ R

Book Description
This Ph.D. thesis is a search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) of particle physics, which successfully describes the interactions and properties of all known elementary particles. However, no particle exists in the SM that can account for the dark matter, which makes up about one quarter of the energy-mass content of the universe. Understanding the nature of dark matter is one goal of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The extension of the SM with supersymmetry (SUSY) is considered a promising possibilities to explain dark matter. The nominated thesis describes a search for SUSY using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. It utilizes a final state consisting of a photon, a lepton, and a large momentum imbalance probing a class of SUSY models that has not yet been studied extensively. The thesis stands out not only due to its content that is explained with clarity but also because the author performed more or less all aspects of the thesis analysis by himself, from data skimming to limit calculations, which is extremely rare, especially nowadays in the large LHC collaborations.

Book Description
One of the most striking signature of supersymmetric models with electroweak symmetry breaking is the presence of multilepton event topologies in the decay products. In this paper searches are presented for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) in final states containing charged leptons from proton-antiproton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, collected with Run II CDF and D0 Detectors in 2002-2006, and corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 1.1 fb−1. In any of the searches no excess of candidates was observed with respect to the SM predictions and limits on masses and production cross-sections are set at the 95% CL.

Book Description
Many extensions have been proposed to the Standard Model of fundamental particles and interactions, therefore we have conducted a general search with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) for particles which would be expected to appear as a resonance in the b$\bar{b}$ mass spectrum produced in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider.
