Book Description
Partial differential equations form an essential part of the core mathematics syllabus for undergraduate scientists and engineers. The origins and applications of such equations occur in a variety of different fields, ranging from fluid dynamics, electromagnetism, heat conduction and diffusion, to quantum mechanics, wave propagation and general relativity. This volume introduces the important methods used in the solution of partial differential equations. Written primarily for second-year and final-year students taking physics and engineering courses, it will also be of value to mathematicians studying mathematical methods as part of their course. The text, which assumes only that the reader has followed a good basic first-year ancillary mathematics course, is self-contained and is an unabridged republication of the third edition published by Longman in 1985.

Book Description
This PhD thesis focuses on the search for flavor-changing neutral currents in the decay of a top quark to an up-type quark (q = u, c) and the Standard Model Higgs boson, where the Higgs boson decays to bb. Further, the thesis presents the combination of this search for top quark pair events with other ATLAS searches – in the course of which the most restrictive bounds to date on tqH interactions were obtained. Following on from the discovery of the Higgs boson, it is particularly important to measure the Yukawa couplings of the Standard Model fermions; these parameters may provide crucial insights to help solve the flavor puzzle and may help reveal the presence of new physics before it is directly observed in experiments.

Book Description
The observation that flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC) in weak decays are highly suppressed was first explained by Glashow, Iliopoulos and Maiani in 1970, and their idea has since become a cornerstone of the Standard Model. They proposed a model of the weak interaction that included a then new fourth quark and which, in a natural way, allowed the existence of a neutral vector boson without inducing FCNC's at tree level. Thus the couplings of the neutral intermediary{hor ellipsis}cause no embarrassment.'' In higher order through, decays like K →?l{bar l} can proceed. Measurements of such processes provide a detailed test of the Standard Model since definite predictions for their rates can be calculated. Conversely, if no contradictions are found and the standard model is assumed to describe the physics, measurements limit the allowed values of the parameters of the model. As is often the case in studying processes that are highly suppressed and heretofore unseen, improvements in the sensitivity of experiments allow the possibility for the discovery of new physics that exhibits a similar experimental signature. This paper describes experiment 787 at Brookhaven which is expected to address some of these issues. The status and future of the experiment will be described here. The main goal of E787 is to measure the rate of K →?+?{bar {nu}} at the standard model level. In addition, the experiment has sensitivity to other FCNC decays of the charged kaon, in particular the decays K+ →?+?+?− and K+ →?+??

Book Description
This book attempts to trace the key experimental developments that led to the discovery of weak neutral currents in 1973 and the W, Z bosons in 1983, all of the results of which culminated in the identification of the unified-electroweak force.

Book Description
A dedicated search for the decays K/sub L/° → [mu]e, K/sub L/° → ee and K/sub L/° → [mu][mu], was carried out at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS (E780). The data obtained were also used in a search for the three-body decays K/sub L/° → [pi]°l /sup /plus/1/sup -/. The two body modes were normalized to the kinelatically similar, CP violating, decay K/sub L/° → [pi]/sup (plus//[pi]/sup -/; whereas the three body modes were normalized to the decay K/sub L/° /yields/ [pi]°/pi//sup /plus//pi//sup /minus//. The search was performed on a sample of K° mesons produced in the forward direction by the interactions of 29 GeV protons on a copper target, and decaying in a 3 meter long region, starting augmented by a hydrogen Cerenkov counter and a lead glass electromagnetic calorimeter, for electron identification, and by a range stack, for muon identification. 9 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.

Book Description
Presented here are the results of a direct search for flavor changing neutral currents via the rare process Z° → bs and a measurement of R{sub bs} = [Lambda](Z° → bs)/[Lambda](Z° → hadrons). Because the decays Z° → b{bar b} and Z° → c{bar c} contribute significant backgrounds to Z° → bs, simultaneous measurements of R{sub b} = [Lambda](Z° → b{bar b})/[Lambda](Z° → hadrons) and R{sub c} = [Lambda](Z° → c{bar c})/[Lambda](Z° → hadrons) were also made. The standard double tag technique was extended and self calibrating tags were used for s, c, and b quarks. These measurements were made possible by the unique capabilities of the SLAC Large Detector (SLD) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC): The b and c tags relied upon the SLD's VXD3 307 megapixel CCD vertex detector for topological and kinematic reconstruction of the B and D decay vertices; the s tag identified K{sup {+-}} mesons using the particle identification capabilities of SLD's Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID), and K{sub S}° mesons and [Lambda] hadrons by kinematic reconstruction of their decay vertices in SLD's 5120 channel central drift chamber (CDC) particle tracking system.

Book Description
Neutral current interactions are known from studies of K meson decays to conserve flavor to a high precision. Although flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) are forbidden in the Weinberg-Salam model, many extensions of the Standard Model allow such processes. We present preliminary upper limits on FCNC-mediated decays of charmed particles, namely D° .-->. ee−, D° .-->. .mu.mu.−, D° .-->. .mu.e and D+ .-->. .pi.+.mu.e.
