Book Description
Presently, surface treatment design and material selection is based on traditional specifications and experience, which are not performance-based and sometimes result in inadequate performance of the surface treatment. In 2000 the first phase of a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) research project developed a surface performance-graded (SPG) specification for the selection of surface treatment binders (Research Report 1710-1). The SPG specification is performance-based and utilizes binder properties directly related to surface treatment performance and associated distress. The specification takes into account environmental conditions, aging effects of the binder, visco-elastic behavior, and reliability. The objective of this second phase of the project was to investigate and establish the validity and applicability of the proposed SPG specification, make modifications where necessary, and, finally, recommend the SPG specification for practical implementation. The research methodology involved highway section identification, laboratory testing including SPG grading, performance monitoring, and comparison of the SPG binder grades to actual field performance. Factors included in the experimental design were binder type and suppliers, environment, aggregates, and traffic. Analyses of the results showed that there is generally a good correlation between the proposed SPG specification and actual field performance. Overall, the results are indicative that the SPG specification is functional and if properly applied, the specification promises to be a relatively cost-effective method for selecting binders to ensure adequate surface treatment performance. However, further validation is recommended, possibly with controlled test sections to fully investigate the effects of design, construction, and quality control processes and address some of the deficiencies of the specification.

Chip Seal Best Practices

Chip Seal Best Practices PDF Author: Douglas D. Gransberg
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 0309097444
Category : Asphalt emulsion mixtures
Languages : en
Pages : 120

Book Description
TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 342: Chip Seal Best Practices examines ways to assist in the development and implementation of pavement preservation programs by identifying the benefits of using chip seal as part of a preventive maintenance program and by highlighting advanced chip seal programs in use around the world. The report includes approximately 40 best practices in the areas of chip seal design methods, contract administration, equipment practices, construction practices, and performance measures. According to the report, the increased use of chip seals for maintenance can be a successful, cost-effective way of using preventive maintenance to preserve both low-volume and higher-volume pavements.

Limit Analysis and Soil Plasticity

Limit Analysis and Soil Plasticity PDF Author: Wai-Fah Chen
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444601066
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 653

Book Description
Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, Volume 7: Limit Analysis and Soil Plasticity covers the theory and applications of limit analysis as applied to soil mechanics. Organized into 12 chapters, the book presents an introduction to the modern development of theory of soil plasticity and includes rock-like material. The first four chapters of the book describe the technique of limit analysis, beginning with the historical review of the subject and the assumptions on which it is based, and then covering various aspects of available techniques of limit analysis. The subsequent chapters deal with the applications of limit analysis to what may be termed "classical soil mechanics problems that include bearing capacity of footings, lateral earth pressure problems, and stability of slopes. In many cases, comparisons of limit analysis solution and conventional limit equilibrium and slip-like solutions are also presented. Other chapters deal with the advances in bearing-capacity problem of concrete blocks or rock and present theoretical and experimental results of various concrete bearing problems. The concluding chapter examines elastic-plastic soil and elastic-plastic-fracture models for concrete materials. This book is an ideal resource text to geotechnical engineers and soil mechanics researchers.

Performance Characteristics of Open-graded Friction Courses

Performance Characteristics of Open-graded Friction Courses PDF Author: Harry A. Smith
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 9780309053068
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 60

Book Description
This synthesis will be of interest to construction, maintenance, pavement design, and materials engineers, pavement contractors, and others interested in the use of open-graded friction courses (OGFC) as an asphalt concrete pavement wearing surface. Information is provided on performance benefits and limitations of OGFC, material and mixture properties, and current construction practices in use in the United States and Europe. Advances in mixture design and construction techniques have overcome several of the performance limitations identified in early applications of OGFC, as well as enhanced the performance benefits associated with OGFC use. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the current state of the practice with respect to the use of OGFC. Experience with the design, construction, and performance of OGFC is summarized, based on a review of the literature, documentation of experience from applications in the U.S. and Europe, and site visits to several states.
