Seabuckthorn is one promising plant that got into focus of public interest. It is the wide range of applications, it's ecological promising benefits and the social-economic effect that inspire people around the world to deal with Seabuckthorn. Actual developments shows a growing interest not only of directly involved persons but of public in general. Since 2003 every second year scientist, producers and growers and enthusiasts met at ISA – International Seabuckthorn Association conferences (the society was founded 2001 on Seabuckthorn Workshop in Delhi) to exchange information, establish new contacts and discuss the future of Seabuckthorn-world. Starting with a small heap of enthusiasts, the scientific community now includes several hundred active and certainly far more than a thousand of interested members. In October 2013 6th meeting of ISA was held in Potsdam, Germany. This booklet is to show a selection from the presented results, some outstanding poster and additional material given by various scientists to the authors. It is to encourage Seabuckthorn friends to intensive and faster to deal with the stated aim of this publication, with research on Seabuckthorn and technological-technical developments. Anyone who reads this book is welcome to send his posts and comments on it to the authors.

Increase in world population, extreme weather conditions, decrease in fresh water supplies, and changes of dietary habits are major issues that affect global food security. We are expected to face the challenges of land use by 2050 because population will reach 9 billion while agricultural productivity losses are expected due to overuse of lands. For developing nations, soil erosion is among the most chronic environmental and economic burdens. Vast amounts of topsoil are washed or blown away from arable land only to accumulate in rivers, reservoirs, harbors, and estuaries, thereby creating a double disaster: a vital resource disappears from where it is desperately needed and is deposited where it is equally unwanted. Despite much rhetoric and effort, little has been done to overcome this problem. Vetiver, a little-known tropical grass, offers one practical and inexpensive way to control erosion on a huge scale in both humid and semi-arid regions. Hedges of this deeply rooted species catch and hold back sediments while the stiff foliage acts as a filter that also slows runoff and keeps moisture on site. This book assesses vetiver's promise and limitations and identifies places where this grass can be deployed without undue environmental risk.

The conference "Combating Desertification with Plants" was held in Beer Sheva, Israel, from November 2-5, 1999, and was attended by 70 participants from 30 countries and/or international organisations. Desertification - the degradation of soils in drylands - is a phenomenon occurring in scores of countries around the globe. The number of people (in semiarid regions) affected by the steady decline in the productivity of their lands is in the hundred millions. The measures required to halt and reverse the process of desertification fall into many categories - policy, institutional, sociological-anthropological, and technical. Although technical "solutions" are not currently in vogue, the conference organizers felt that perhaps the pendulum had swung too far in the direction of "participatory approaches." Hence IPALAC - The International Program for Arid Land Crops - whose function is to serve as a catalyst for optimizing the contribution of plant germplasm to sustainable development in desertification-prone regions - felt the time was opportune for providing a platform for projects where the "plant-driven" approach to development finds expression. Some 45 papers were delivered at the conference, falling into the categories of this volume: Overview, Potential Germplasm for Arid Lands, Introduction, Domestication and Dissemination of Arid Land Plants, Land Rehabilitation, and Mechanisms of Plant Transfer. The conference was funded by UNESCO (Division of Ecological Sciences), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, and MASHAV, Israel's Center for International Development Cooperation.
