Book Description
Excerpt from Sea Fables Explained The little book 'sea Monsters Unmasked, ' recently issued as one Of the Handbooks in connection with the Great International Fisheries Exhibition has met with SO favourable a reception, that I have been honoured by the request to continue the subject, and to treat also Of some of the Fables of the Sea, which once were universally believed, and even now are not utterly extinct. The topic is not here exhausted. Other sea fables and fallacies might be mentioned and explained; but the amount Of letter-press, and the number of illustrations that can be printed without loss' for the small sun} of one Shilling - the price at which these Handbooks are uniformly published - is necessarily limited. I have, therefore, thought it better to endeavour to make each chapter as complete as possible than to crowd into the space allotted to me a greater variety of subjects less fully and carefully discussed. Greek Prose Composition (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Henry Carr Pearson
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN:
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Leaving the Sea PDF Author: Ben Marcus
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0307739988
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
By turns hilarious and heartfelt, dark and illuminative, Ben Marcus’s Leaving the Sea is a ground breaking collection of stories from one of the single most vital, extraordinary, and unique writers of his generation. In the heartfelt “I Can Say Many Nice Things,” a washed-up writer toying with infidelity leads a creative writing workshop on board a cruise ship. In the dystopian “Rollingwood,” a divorced father struggles to take care of his ill infant, as his ex-wife and colleagues try to render him irrelevant. In “Watching Mysteries with My Mother,” a son meditates on his mother’s mortality, hoping to stave off her death for as long as he sits by her side. And in the title story, told in a single breathtaking sentence, we watch as the narrator’s marriage and his sanity unravel, drawing him to the brink of suicide. Surreal and tender, terrifying and life-affirming, Leaving the Sea is the work of an utterly unique writer at the height of his powers.
