Chicago

Chicago PDF Author: John F. McDonald
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317418816
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
Chicago went from nothing in 1830 to become the second-largest city in the nation in 1900, while the Midwest developed to become one of the world’s foremost urban areas. This book is an economic history of the Chicago metropolitan area from the 1820s to the present. It examines the city in its Midwestern region and compares it to the other major cities of the North. This book uses theories of the economics of location and other economic models to explain much of Chicago’s history. Chicago maintained its status as the second-largest city through the first decades of the 20th century, but rapid growth shifted to the Sunbelt following World War II. Since the 1950s the city’s history can be divided into four distinct periods; growth with suburbanization (1950-1970), absence of growth, continued suburbanization, and central city crisis (1970-1990), rebound in the 1990s, and financial crisis and deep recession after 2000. Through it all Chicago has maintained its position as the economic capital of the Midwest. The book is a synthesis of available literature and public data, and stands as an example of using economics to understand much of the history of Chicago. This book is intended for the college classroom, urban scholars, and for those interested in the history of one of world’s foremost urban areas.

Joyce J. Scott

Joyce J. Scott PDF Author: Joyce Scott
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300276206
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
"This essential retrospective of genre-defying artist and MacArthur Fellow Joyce J. Scott (b. 1948) showcases her expansive and versatile career. From early textiles and wearables, to performances and public artworks, to celebrated beaded sculptures and signature necklaces, her innovative oeuvre centers on the ancient, global technologies of needle and thread, beadwork, salvage, song, and storytelling. Interviews with Scott and essays from an extraordinary group of artists and scholars explore this dynamic practice, rooted in place, community, and intergenerational knowledge. Extensive new photography and rich archival images reveal a dazzling, provocative body of work that makes difficult subjects intimately felt, confronting racism, sexism, classism, ableism, and histories of trauma through wearable art and exquisite sculpture. With humor and pathos, Scott twists menacing stereotypes into grotesque and tender retorts that spur conversation and reflection, grief and laughter, learning and healing."--Back cover.

The ABC Movie of the Week became a great success and a cultural touchstone for a generation of Americans. In this loving tribute to the classic series of TV films, more than two hundred films in the series are reviewed, including well-remembered titles such as Duel, Tribes, The Six Million Dollar Man, Go Ask Alice, Brian's Song, The Night Stalker, Bad Ronald, Starsky and Hutch, Trilogy of Terror, That Certain Summer, and Killdozer. In addition, choice bits of trivia about the actors and films and exclusive pictures are sprinkled throughout the book. So bit back, relax, and return to a time when the counterculture was in full swing and you could tune in every week for one or more original films made just for you.
