Book Description
Georgetown and Scott County discloses the historic personality of one of mid-America's most rapidly growing communities. Scott County, for many years, was one of Kentucky's leading agricultural counties. In 1985, it leapt to the forefront among industrial communities as Toyota established a major American manufacturing operation in Georgetown, the county seat. With over 200 unique photographs, many of which are previously unpublished, this volume provides a lively glimpse into this Bluegrass county's ever-changing rural and urban communities. You will find within these pages many of the older features of the county that no longer exist, including those in areas like the small city of Stamping Ground. Take a closer look into the everyday lives of early Scott Countians at work and at play through decades of social, political, and industrial changes.

ISBN: 9780738583150
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
After the Blackhawk Purchase of 1832, settlement of eastern Iowa was opened up to white settlers the next year. Antoine LeClaire, who served as the translator at the purchase, received large tracts of land from grateful members of the Sauk tribe. With this land, he and others founded the city of Davenport, named after Col. George Davenport, a successful fur trader. Other towns cropped up throughout Scott County, newly formed in 1837. Over the next several decades, Davenport and these other towns throughout the county grew and gave rise to successful, interesting citizens of their own. Some were inventors like William Bettendorf, who created the Bettendorf Truck. Others were lawyers and mayors, such as Ebenezer Cook and Ernst Claussen. Whatever their profession or the path they took in life, many left their mark on Scott County. They now lay in their final resting spot in the cemeteries of Scott County.

A History of Weiss Lake

A History of Weiss Lake PDF Author: Douglas Scott Wright
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1614230668
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 169

Book Description
Until the late 1950s, the major body of water for residents of northeast Alabama was the Coosa River, which wove prominently through the rural landscape of the region. When Alabama Power Company decided to dam the river in order to build a thirty-thousand-acre reservoir, locals were divided about whether to welcome the hydroelectricity and potential prosperity or resist losing their land and proud agrarian heritage. Three years and millions of cubic yards of earth later, Weiss Lake emerged to alter Cherokee County history permanently. Post editor and county native Scott Wright presents a captivating collection of personal recollections and historical vignettes to illustrate the magnitude of the lake's influence in shaping the future of the area--and damming its past.
