Scotch Baronial
Author: Miles Glendinning
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1474283489
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
As the debate about Scottish independence rages on, this book takes a timely look at how Scotland's politics have been expressed in its buildings, exploring how the architecture of Scotland – in particular the constantly-changing ideal of the 'castle' – has been of great consequence to the ongoing narrative of Scottish national identity. Scotch Baronial provides a politically-framed examination of Scotland's kaleidoscopic 'castle architecture', tracing how it was used to serve successive political agendas both prior to and during the three 'unionist centuries' from the early 17th century to the 20th century. The book encompasses many of the country's most important historic buildings – from the palaces left behind by the 'lost' monarchy, to revivalist castles and the proud town halls of the Victorian age – examining their architectural styles and tracing their wildly fluctuating political and national connotations. It ends by bringing the story into the 21st century, exploring how contemporary 'neo-modernist' architecture in today's Scotland, as exemplified in the Holyrood parliament, relates to concepts of national identity in architecture over the previous centuries.

Scotch College Adelaide Through the Camera Lens: 1919 - 2019
Author: John Camens
Publisher: Scotch College Adelaide
ISBN: 0646894897
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 449
Book Description
“A picture is worth a thousand words,” an expression credited to advertising executive Fred Barnard from the 1920s, underscores the power of visual imagery. If there is merit in this expression, then this book contains in excess of two million words! Scotch College Adelaide has been fortunate to have benefited from a community with the desire and foresight to capture, collect, store, and curate many photos of the College grounds, buildings, activities, events, and people. My objective when commencing this book was to share as many of these photos as possible with the broader Scotch community, thereby indirectly telling its story. The written history of Scotch, along with descriptions of people and events from the College’s first 100 years, can be found in several publications. Notable works include Ken Preiss and Pamela Oborn’s The Torrens Park Estate, Peter Read and Alex Pouw-Bray’s Ninety Years at Torrens Park, the unpublished document by Nicole Desjardins Moschakis on the College’s Management Structure and Infrastructure (1919-2019), the Scotch College Magazines, Cluaran, and Scotch Reports. The written introductions and text accompanying each chapter are designed to provide context and summaries. They were largely sourced from the aforementioned documents. The images have been selected primarily for their effectiveness in telling the Scotch story, some gaps exist and not every era is showcased equally. The photos are generally laid out in chronological order. In certain sections however, they have been displayed randomly to give the reader an opportunity to observe how much the College has either changed – or remained the same – over its 100 years. Unless otherwise specified, names of people in the photos are listed from left to right. I am grateful for the support I have received from the College in producing this book, particularly Warren King and Natalie Felkl from the Development Office. Jarren Gallway from openbook howden deserves significant recognition for the design and layout of the images and text. I also extend my thanks to Evan Hiscock (’64), Rod Dyson, Ken Webb, Suzanne Farrington, Rebecca Healy, Murray Camens (’71), Phil Camens (’76), Margaret Howard (’74) (nee Camens), Sandra Paterson, Sarah Freeman (’87) and Mark Kelly for their invaluable advice and support on the content, structure and proof reading of this publication. Many current and former staff members, as well as Old Collegians, have also contributed additional photographs, content, names and captions. I hope this book offers a meaningful insight into life at Scotch over its first 100 years and rekindles fond memories of the community’s connection with the College. May it celebrate the friendships and experiences that have shaped and continue to influence the lives of “Scotchies”.

Whiskey Business
Author: Tom Acitelli
Publisher: Chicago Review Press
ISBN: 1613734611
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
Discover the underdog story of the improbable rise of small-batch distilling in America. This bracingly written, fast-paced work traces the relationship of Americans to spirits such as bourbon, scotch, vodka, gin, and rum. And it presents the full story of a plucky band of entrepreneurs who disrupted the nation's conception of how those libations could appear and taste—and how much they could cost. Acitelli weaves the unlikely triumph of the small-batch distilling movement into other major trends, including a neo-Prohibitionism that nearly croaked the entire thing, America's re-embrace of cocktails, and the twin rises of craft beer and fine wine. He also expertly delves into the controversies currently wracking American spirits, ones that threaten to tank the movement at the moment of what should be its greatest triumph.

101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die (Revised & Updated)
Author: Ian Buxton
Publisher: Headline
ISBN: 0755362985
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 223
Book Description
Revised and updated in 2013, 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die is a whisky guide with a difference. It is not an awards list. It is not a list of the 101 'best' whiskies in the world in the opinion of a self-appointed whisky guru. It is simply a guide to the 101 whiskies that enthusiasts must seek out and try in order to complete their whisky education. Avoiding the deliberately obscure, the ridiculously limited and the absurdly expensive, whisky expert Ian Buxton recommends an eclectic selection of old favourites, stellar newcomers and mystifyingly unknown drams that simply have to be drunk. The book decodes the marketing hype and gets straight to the point; whether from India, America, Sweden, Ireland, Japan or the hills, glens and islands of Scotland, here are the 101 whiskies that you really want. Try them before you die - Slainte!
