Book Description
Excerpt from School Management and Methods of Instruction: With Special Reference to Elementary Schools In times past it was considered that the chief, and indeed almost the only, qualification necessary in a teacher was a knowledge of the subject to be taught. A knowledge of child nature and of the principles of the working of the mind was not considered at all essential. The tendency of the present day is to go to the other extreme, and regard a knowledge of psychology as being the only qualification that a teacher should bring to his work. The correct view seems to be that the ideal teacher should not only be well versed in the subjects he is required to teach and in the principles of psychology, but should also have studied the relation of subject-matter to mind. He should have considered carefully the effects that the subject is calculated to have in the development of the pupil's mind, and how the subject may best be divided up and presented so as to produce those effects.
