Book Description
This text for college freshmen is based upon a number of strongly held beliefs. 1. A book for college freshmen should aim at respectable English for the ordinary purpose of life -- not authorship. 2. During the freshmen year the forming of correct language habits is by far the most important thing. 3. The teacher should give the student very early a clear-cut notion as to what constitutes criticism. 4. As the course continues, the student should do more and more revising before submitting a theme to the teacher's criticism. 5. The students time is precious. They should be given only those writing tasks that serve either to establish good habits or that open them up to new knowledge of English composition. 6. The teacher's time is precious. An instructor should not be expected to spend it on a theme that the student has not put into the best condition of which they are capable. 7. It is best to begin with a course with freshmen slowly -- even in an elementary manner -- with something that is easily within their comprehension.
