This study is a secondary analysis of data from the2015 Puerto Rico School Climate Survey (PRSCS),who explored the relationships between a hostile school climate, depression, and self-esteem of LGBTQ students. The PRSCS was part of the 2015 National School Climate Survey (NSCS), a larger study about the experiences ofLGBTQ secondary school students, conducted by GLSEN throughout the USA every two years. The PRSCS sample consisted of two hundred and eleven students (N=211),and the age of the participants was between13 and 20 years old. The results suggest that LGBTQ students in Puerto Rico that experienced discriminatory practices at school, as well as the students that experienced victimization in school based on sexual orientation were more prone to develop depression symptomatology than the students who had not. Experiences of anti-LGBTQ remarks based on sexual orientation or gender expression, victimization based on gender expression and feeling unsafe at school were not associated to depression symptoms in the participants. The self-esteem of the participants did not differ significantly by experiencing discriminatory practices, anti-LGBTQ remarks based on sexual orientation or gender expression, victimization based on sexual orientation and gender expression, or by feeling unsafe in school. Schools in Puerto Rico should ensure that school policies and practices do not discriminate against LGBTQ students. To provide a safe environment that promotes the psychological well-being of LGBTQ students, schools in Puerto Rico need to be safe and affirming places for all.

There has been dramatic social change with respect to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights around the world in the last decade. Yet legal protection and inclusion remain limited for LGBT youth. The context of schooling is especially important-schools remain the primary societal institution to which most youth have access and in which nearly all youth spend some significant portion of their lives. LGBT youth are at risk for some of the greatest difficulties experienced by adolescents, and many of those problems have been traced directly to negative school experiences. Research shows that anti-LGBT school victimization results in poor academic performance and negative school attitudes, mental health, and risk behaviors. New studies have identified characteristics of schools that are associated with inclusion and safety for LGBT students, including practices and policies that are associated with positive school climate and student wellbeing. Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Schooling brings together contributions from a diverse group of researchers, policy analysts, and education advocates from around the world to synthesize the practice and policy implications of research on sexual orientation, gender identity, and schooling. The book is interdisciplinary, as studies of LGBT students and schooling have emerged across disciplines including education, clinical, school, and developmental psychology; sociology; and public health. Included are syntheses of key areas of research; examples of new international models for educational practice; case studies of transformational policy and practice; and specific examples of the nexus of research, practice, and policy. The high prevalence of anti-LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning) bullying in U.S. schools is extreme and commonplace. LGBTQ students - and heterosexual students who are perceived to be gay - routinely experience discrimination and sexual prejudice. This mixed method study examined student perceptions of school climate, psychological sense of community (PSOC), and Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) in U.S. high schools. Data was analyzed to explore whether students from high schools with GSAs report a more positive general school climate, less homophobic school climate, and higher PSOC than students from high schools without GSAs, regardless of their sexual orientation. Quantitative findings of mean differences between participants from high schools with and without GSAs were nonsignificant, however, meaningful qualitative themes emerged that helped to contextualize these results. Qualitative analysis yielded themes related to geographical factors, values of those in power, GSA effectiveness, multiple PSOC, covert and overt homophobia, and bystander intervention. The mixed method findings provided a nuanced understanding of students' perceptions and experiences.
