Book Description
After a failed attempt to fly, a fledgling female cardinal is saved from the jaws of a cat and brought into the home of a family living on Florida's coast. Raised with an eyedropper and a great deal of loving care, the tiny bird encounters many adventures in her young life, including a three-day ordeal outdoors during an intense winter storm, during which she nearly dies before the family finds her and brings her indoors again. Later when she answers the mating call of a male redbird on the other side of the patio's screen, the family attempts to lure her to his side outdoors, but instead the male chooses to come inside the patio to live with her there. She builds a nest, and together the pair rides out a hurricane, as she hunkers lower on her three tiny speckled eggs while her mate stands by on the branch above the nest. Her name is Scarlett, his name is Red, and the story reaches a happy ending with the arrival of the pair's first-hatched baby bird.

China's Sent-Down Generation

China's Sent-Down Generation PDF Author: Helena K. Rene
Publisher: Georgetown University Press
ISBN: 1589019873
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
During China’s Cultural Revolution, Chairman Mao Zedong’s "rustication program" resettled 17 million urban youths, known as "sent downs," to the countryside for manual labor and socialist reeducation. This book, the most comprehensive study of the program to be published in either English or Chinese to date, examines the mechanisms and dynamics of state craft in China, from the rustication program’s inception in 1968 to its official termination in 1980 and actual completion in the 1990s. Rustication, in the ideology of Mao's peasant-based revolution, formed a critical component of the Cultural Revolution's larger attack on bureaucrats, capitalists, the intelligentsia, and "degenerative" urban life. This book assesses the program’s origins, development, organization, implementation, performance, and public administrative consequences. It was the defining experience for many Chinese born between 1949 and 1962, and many of China's contemporary leaders went through the rustication program. The author explains the lasting impact of the rustication program on China's contemporary administrative culture, for example, showing how and why bureaucracy persisted and even grew stronger during the wrenching chaos of the Cultural Revolution. She also focuses on the special difficulties female sent-downs faced in terms of work, pressures to marry local peasants, and sexual harassment, predation, and violence. The author’s parents were both sent downs, and she was able to interview over fifty former sent downs from around the country, something never previously accomplished. China's Sent-Down Generation demonstrates the rustication program’s profound long-term consequences for China's bureaucracy, for the spread of corruption, and for the families traumatized by this authoritarian social experiment. The book will appeal to academics, graduate and undergraduate students in public administration and China studies programs, and individuals who are interested in China’s Cultural Revolution era.

Book Description
Blindsided by two teenage boys occupying a monstrous Dodge Ram while they were fantasizing about their intentions to commit a homicidal blunt force tragedy, this information, in addition to my learning of the instrumental betrayals by multitudes of their mentors, which was a plethora of principals, educators, proclaimed community leaders, their associates, parents and friends of friends, reminded me sternly of the psalmist's words inspired by the Holy Spirit: "Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings who cannot save." Accountable to God, religiously donning my fitness attire, I am continually reminding myself that my health and well-being are disciplines that the Holy Spirit dwells within this temple and that I was subject to God's authority and must maintain this temple for his presence, a temple acceptable and inhabitable by the Holy Spirit. I was eager to ensue upon the beautiful evening jaunt. I was aware that the battlefield continually looms with darkness, but what I also knew for certain on that particular evening was that I was a child of God and I was going to live my life-long desires to share and promote God's love. What I didn't know was that my continual attempts to preserve this temple he resides in was becoming savagely under attack by the evil one. This spiritual attack, turned physical, was in a boldly mounting progression for years. The evil one worked through the hearts, minds, and spirits of these two teenage boys in addition to those they were emulating day after day, their multitude of mentors, their earthly rulers who made decisions and judgments erringly and unjustly, all critically immorally coexisting still.
