Book Description
Swedish fiddle music has been greatly influenced by the surrounding countries. Evidence of this can be found in the names of some types of tunes, such as Polska from Poland, Schottis (a schottische) from Scotland, and Engelska from England. Other popular types of tunes included in this collection are gånglåt which is a kind of march, brudmarsch which is a wedding tune, skänklåt which is played at weddings when gifts are given to the bride and groom, and vals (a waltz). with Swedish music being very much an aural tradition, there are almost as many versions of tunes as there are people who play them. for this reason, the notation does not include much ornamentation, leaving it up to the player. Second parts have been included with some of the tunes. Each tune includes a translation of the title.

The Fiddler's Fakebook

The Fiddler's Fakebook PDF Author: David Brody
Publisher: Oak Publications
ISBN: 1783235829
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
From the author’s preface: “This book was conceived four years ago, almost to the day, at a time when I was teaching fiddle and mandolin in New York City. It was my idea then, with my students in mind, to compile a book of the most often played, most important and most interesting fiddle tunes from the various Celtic and North American traditions. The tunes were chosen by cataloging a large number of recordings by tune title. A tally was taken to find out which had been recorded most often. This established a foundation of material that could not be left out. To this list I added the names of other pieces which had not been recorded as frequently, but which I knew were played regularly and with respect. I admit to sprinkling the collection with a few lesser known tunes which happen to be personal favorites, but I am sure they will hold their own when placed next to the old war horses of the fiddler’s repertoire. . . . Although I started out with my students in mind this book has turned out to be the book that I’ve always wanted and I hope that it will serve the advanced player as well as the beginner.”

Fiddling for Norway

Fiddling for Norway PDF Author: Chris Goertzen
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226300528
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 374

Book Description
Fiddling for Norway is an engrossing portrait of a fiddle-based folk revival in Norway, one that in many ways parallels contemporary folk institutions and festivals throughout the world, including American fiddling. It is a detailed case study in the politics of culture, the causes and purposes of folk revivals, and the cultivation of music to define identity. The book begins with an investigation of the people and events important to Norwegian folk fiddling, tracing the history of Norwegian folk music and the growth and diversification of the folk music revival. The narrative takes us to fiddle clubs, concerts and competitions on the local, regional, and national levels, and shows how conflicting emphases—local vs. national identity, tradition vs. aesthetic qualities—continue to transform Norwegian folk music. Goertzen utilizes a large anthology of meticulously transcribed tunes to illustrate personal and regional repertoires, aspects of performance practice, melodic gesture and form, and tune relationships. Ethnomusicologists and readers who fiddle will enjoy both the music and the stories it tells.

Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 433

Book Description
North American Fiddle Music: A Research and Information Guide is the first large-scale annotated bibliography and research guide on the fiddle traditions of the United States and Canada. These countries, both of which have large immigrant populations as well as Native populations, have maintained fiddle traditions that, while sometimes faithful to old-world or Native styles, often feature blended elements from various traditions. Therefore, researchers of the fiddle traditions in these two countries can not only explore elements of fiddling practices drawn from various regions of the world, but also look at how different fiddle traditions can interact and change. In addition to including short essays and listings of resources about the full range of fiddle traditions in those two countries, it also discusses selected resources about fiddle traditions in other countries that have influenced the traditions in the United States and Canada.
