Fusarium Head Blight of Wheat and Barley PDF Author: Kurt J. Leonard
Publisher: American Phytopathological Society
ISBN:
Category : Barley
Languages : en
Pages : 544

Book Description
The book provides a comprehensive record of current knowledge on the nature of Fusarium head blight, the damage it causes, and current research on how to control it. The book begins with a historical account of Fusarium head blight epidemics that gives context to recent attempts to control epidemics in wheat and barley. A review of pathogen taxonomy and population biology helps scientists to see relationships among head blight pathogens and other Fusarium species. The information on epidemiology included in this review also provides an understanding of the weather conditions and cultural practices that promote explosive epidemics. New information on infection processes will lead the reader to a better understanding of how to breed for resistance in wheat and barley.

Management of Wheat and Barley Diseases

Management of Wheat and Barley Diseases PDF Author: Devendra Pal Singh
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351800353
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 593

Book Description
Both wheat and barley are two of the most important food and industrial crops in the world. Wheat and barley cultivation has experienced changes in practices due to factors such as methods of conservation agriculture, cropping systems, wheat varieties, changes in weather patterns, and international trade, necessitating new and different approaches for the successful management of emerging diseases and new pathotypes of pathogens. This valuable volume explores a multitude of new approaches and techniques for the effective management of emerging wheat diseases. This new volume presents the latest literature on management technology of diseases that affect the production of wheat and are capable of reducing grain yields as well as grain quality. These diseases include rusts, smuts, other foliar diseases such as blight, spots, blotch, powdery mildew, bunts, etc., as well as diseases such as Karnal bunt of wheat, which is of importance to international trade. This book will be highly valuable to researchers, students, teachers, farmers, seed growers, traders, and other stakeholders dealing with wheat and barley. It also advances our knowledge in the field of plant pathology, plant breeding, and plant biotechnology, agronomy, and grain quality and pesticide industries. The book will serve as a reference on disease management technologies for the containment of losses in wheat and barley yields and will assist in maintaining wheat quality, reducing the cost of cultivation, increasing yield, and thus in helping to ensuring food security on a global level.

Seed Treatments for the Control of Certain Diseases of Wheat, Oats, and Barley (Classic Reprint)

Seed Treatments for the Control of Certain Diseases of Wheat, Oats, and Barley (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Benjamin Koehler
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331550443
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 84

Book Description
Excerpt from Seed Treatments for the Control of Certain Diseases of Wheat, Oats, and Barley As the literature on the effectiveness of seed treatments is very voluminous, only a few references on the history of such treatments and some of the more recent articles that have a close bearing on the experiments reported will be given. The use of preventive seed treatments may have started in England. It is said that in about 1760 a shipload of wheat sank at Bristol and that the wheat was salvaged after having been in the sea water. As the germination still was satisfactory, the whole cargo was sold and much of it was sown by farmers thruout that area. At har vest time much of the wheat in England was smutty, but that grown from the seed which had been soaked in sea water apparently was free from smut. From this accidental discovery, the brining method was developed. This method, however, has not proved entirely satisfactory.
