Ils traitent seulement de la biologie et des moeurs du poisson. Sur la pêche du saumon, il existe peu de chose, sinon volontairement limité à certains aspects de la question [...] Je crois donc que pour la pêche du saumon traitée dans son ensemble, Louis Carrère est un précurseur. Le saumon! Nom glorieux! Combien Louis Carrère a eu raison de faire revivre dans le titre de cet ouvrage la noble et vieille appellation de « poisson royal »! Dans notre ancien droit, en effet, le saumon qui venait à s’échouer sur le rivage appartenait au roi seul. Il était interdit de le traiter comme épave et de le partager comme le voulait la coutume. De tous les sports du bord de l’eau, la pêche du saumon à la mouche est celui qui les domine tous. C’est, selon moi, le seul procédé digne du poisson royal. Tout concourt à faire de cette pêche un passe-temps de demi-dieu : la finesse et la qualité du matériel qui, dans aucun de ses détails, ne souffre le médiocre, la suprême élégance des attitudes et des gestes, l’expérience personnelle de la rivière indispensable au succès, la force et la noblesse de l’adversaire, et l’espoir aiguisé par une constante incertitude de piquer sur un coup de ligne heureux un poisson magnifique. Et puis, il y a les mouches, une des grandes difficultés de cette pêche, mais aussi son attrait. [...] Et je me revois à Navarrenx, écoutant sans en perdre un mot les histoires de saumons de Louis Carrère. Je revis ces soirées, où l’on ne parle que de saumon, où l’on ne pense qu’au saumon...
