Davis's narrative follows the 77th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment on its trek from Pittsburgh, PA to Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and back to Louisville, KY. It contains details of the unit's daily marches and mentions the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Chaplin Hills, and problems with bushwhackers and the Texas Rangers.
