Following the same format as the highly praised 2000-2004 edition, Recommended Books in Spanish for Children and Young Adults, 2004-2008 is an outstanding reference tool that includes annotated entries for more than 1,200 books in Spanish published between 2004 and 2008 in the U.S., Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, and Argentina. Each entry includes an extensive critical annotation, title in Spanish as well as English, tentative grade level, and approximate price. Whether used for the development and support of an existing library collection or for the creation of a new library serving Spanish-speaking young readers, the books in this volume are of value to Spanish-speaking children and young adults (or those who wish to learn Spanish). This volume is arranged in four sections: Reference, Nonfiction (Philosophy, Psychology, Religion, Social Science, Folklore, Language, Science, Technology, Health and Medicine, The Arts, Recreation and Sports, Literature, Poetry, Geography, History, and Biography), Publishers' Series, and Fiction (Easy Books, General Fiction and Graphic Novels). Book Description
"In the pursuit of the modern, the armed forces served as instrument, model, and metaphor for national progress. I examine in this book how the military experience, as representative of the process, failed or fulfilled aspects of the broad national transition towards hegemony and sovereignty. This is the first work combining personnel records and military literature with cultural sources to address the setting of military life for soldiers and their families rather than politics or officers. In connection with nation formation and identity, this book moves away from studies of the army as an institution to broaden understandings of inculcations and the limits and fault lines of building Mexico as a nation. More social and cultural in historical outlook, I examine the creation of political cultures rooted in or derived from the personal experiences of the lower ranks. In doing so, the book removes some of the privileged view that official narratives emphasize in order to explain the making of a bureaucratic institution from the bottom up, and to more clearly describe how this process both encouraged the development of nationalism and limited it in important ways. In this fashion I build on the works of scholars whose focus has centered more on officers, education, and political conflicts"--Introduction.

Book Description
Candace Slater's new book focuses on narratives concerning Fray Leopoldo de Alpandeire (1864-1956), a Capuchin friar from Granada and probably the most popular nonconsecrated saint today in all of Spain. In tracing the emergence of a group of contemporary legends about Fray Leopoldo, Slater discusses both the stories she tape-recorded in the streets of Granada and the friar's official biography. She underscores the essential pluralism of the tales, their undercurrent of resistance to institutional authority, and their deep concern for the relationship between past and present. Bearing witness to the subtlety and resilience of even the most apparently conservative folk-literary forms, these stories are not only about the role of saints and miracles in an increasingly secular and industrial society but, first and foremost, also about the legacy of the Franco years. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1990.

Book Description
This vivid exposé of corruption and political tyranny in the Dominican Republic rang so true to the reality that the President of that country went on television to denounce the book. Sención's novel follows the lives of three seminary students who suffer from church-state oppression. The book also gives a chilling portrait of Dr. Ramos, a sinister autocrat, who manages to survive six terms as president of his country through manipulation and tyranny.
