More Information Little known outside his native Poland, Joseph Kalinowski (Raphael of St. Joseph, O.C.D.) was born in 1835 and became, by turns, an engineer, a military officer, a leader in the 1863 insurrection against Russian domination, an exile in Siberia, a tutor, and eventually a Discalced Carmelite priest. He died in 1907 at the Carmelite monastery he had founded in Wadowice, the city where Karol Wojtyla-the future Pope John Paul II who would later beatify and canonize him-was born only 13 years later. Today Raphael Kalinowski is remembered especially as a man of boundless charity in the Siberian prison camps, a restorer of Carmel in Poland, a skilled confessor and spiritual director, and a tireless promoter of Marian devotion and of unity between the Eastern and Western Churches. In 1991, he became the first Discalced Carmelite friar canonized since St. John of the Cross. This booklet offers a concise introduction to one of the pope's favorite saints, and includes a brief biography of Saint Raphael Kalinowski, a synthesis of his spiritual message, 12 photos, and (for the first time in English) selections from his writings.

St. Raphael Kalinowski was one of the first people to recognize the value and significance of the message of St. Thrse of Lisieux. This was in the very early days when even some Carmelite prioresses had failed to grasp the importance of Thrse for the modern era in the church. He wrote: Armed with the sign of the Cross I open the book (Story of a Soul) and find the place where the fire in her heart unites with the burning heart of Jesus in Vivre dAmour.(To Live by Love).Suddenly the storm dies down, calm returns and something indescribable floods my whole being and changes me completely. This poem became an ark of salvation for me. The dear sister gave me confidence. I therefore conclude that the promise: I will spend my heaven in doing good on earthAfter my death I will send down a shower of roses, is literally fulfilled. St. Raphael was also greatly influenced by the example of famous pianist Hermann Cohen who became a Carmelite priest and founded Carmelite communities in France and England. He arranged for a translation of Story of a Soul and a Life of Hermann Cohen to be translated into Polish. We hope this volume, appearing as it does, soon after a year recalling the Fifth Centenary of St. Teresa of Avila, will make St. Raphael better known and loved in the English speaking world and inspire people to value her charism and dedicate themselves to Christ and his Church at the present time. It is a commonplace in devotional literature, historical scholarship, and papal writings that Saint Teresa of Ávila played a key role in the development of veneration of Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph and the Carmelite Reform of Saint Teresa of Ávila unpacks this commonplace by recovering the often-overlooked back story to Teresa's story, namely, the extraordinarily rich liturgical cult of Saint Joseph in the Ancient Order of Carmel which fully flowered in the Teresian Carmel and beyond, to the universal Church. This volume charts a narrative arc from the liturgical cult of Saint Joseph in the Carmelite Order of Ancient Observance; to Saint Joseph's vital formative presence in Saint Teresa's life and reformed Carmel as father, teacher of prayer, and intercessor in every need; to the Carmelite family as a whole giving liturgical expression to its privileged relationship with Saint Joseph by the establishment of the Feast of the Patronage of Saint Joseph; to this feast becoming widespread outside Carmel and ultimately extended to the Universal Church (1847); and, finally, to Saint Joseph's proclamation as Patron of the Universal Church (1870). An epilogue considers the absence of Joseph's title "Patron of the Universal Church" in the post-Vatican II liturgical calendar and books, while the papal magisterium has consistently insisted that this patronage is ever necessary for the Church as not only a protection against all dangers, but also an impetus for its mission of evangelization and re-evangelization.
