Book Description
Excerpt from The White Queen: A Tale of the Youth of St. Louis, King of France The mother moved first. When the dawn stole through the chinks beneath the crazy door, she rose, stirred the dying fire, and felt for the hand of her child. It lay warm - too warm - within her own. Then the little one tossed on the trundle-bed, and in a hoarse voice asked for water. She was holding the cup to its lips when Jean the Miller roused from his straw close by, and the mother could guess His question before he uttered it. Book Description
Excerpt from Saint Louis, King of France, 1215-1270 It was the 25th of April - probably in 1215, but the exact year is uncertain - the festival of St. Mark in the joyous Easter season. The French peasantry had donned their holiday attire, for there was surcease of tillage in the land on that day, and sports and revelry in prospect for the afternoon. But in the early morning hours the bells boomed solemnly from village steeple and castle keep, summoning the faithful to join in the processions, with black-draped crosses in front, which wound slowly through the several parishes, while the chant of the Greater Litanies filled the air with bewailings and petitions for graces and temporal prosperity, but more especially for a mitigation of the misery of Christians in the Holy Land. Book Description
Excerpt from Saint Louis Of explanation. The reader must not look for a history of St Louis, that is, for a chronological and methodical account of the actions of his life and the events of his reign. This would not, in our opinion, correspond to the general design of the collection in which this essay is to find a place. We have thought it better to make a study of the character and sanctity of this great Christian and royal person, considered under the different aspects of his private and public life. It has been our ideal to present to our readers a series of historic pictures in stained glass, devoted to the life of St Louis. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the St. Louis Cathedral, of New Orleans Chartres (formerly Conde), St. Anne and Royal streets and St. Antoine alley, the later named in honor of father antoine, the first curate of the church. A wooden and adobe structure was erected under the auspices of the French Government, and in honor of the King of France, named the Church of St. Ignatius, about 1720, from which time date the archives of the Catholic Church in New Orleans. In January, 1721, Father Charlevoix, a Jesuit missionary, reached New Orleans from Canada by way of the Illinois and the Mississippi rivers, and in his description of the infant city he sums it up as consisting of one hundred cabins, placed without much order, a large wooden ware house, two or three dwelling houses that would not' have adorned a vil lage, and a miserable storehouse which had been at first occupied as a chapel - a shed being now used for this purpose. The population of the city did not then exceed 200 persons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
