North Carolina Architecture

North Carolina Architecture PDF Author: Catherine W. Bishir
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469620782
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 680

Book Description
This award-winning, lavishly illustrated history displays the wide range of North Carolina's architectural heritage, from colonial times to the beginning of World War II. North Carolina Architecture addresses the state's grand public and private buildings that have become familiar landmarks, but it also focuses on the quieter beauty of more common structures: farmhouses, barns, urban dwellings, log houses, mills, factories, and churches. These buildings, like the people who created them and who have used them, are central to the character of North Carolina. Now in a convenient new format, this portable edition of North Carolina Architecture retains all of the text of the original edition as well as hundreds of halftones by master photographer Tim Buchman. Catherine Bishir's narrative analyzes construction and design techniques and locates the structures in their cultural, political, and historical contexts. This extraordinary history of North Carolina's built world presents a unique and valuable portrait of the state.

Book Description
Excerpt from Journal of the Forty-Eighth Annual Council of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the State of North Carolina: Held in St. John's Church, Williamsborough on Wednesday May 18, Thursday May 19, Friday May 20, and Saturday May 21, and in Christ Church, Raleigh, on Wednesday June 22, and Thursday June 23, 1864 The circumstances at der which we meet in our present Annual Council to inquire into the state of the Church, and to devise measures for its welfare and increase, are well calculated to quicken our zeal in that good work, for the things of this life have never seemed more unsatisfactory and untrustworthy than at present, and the blessed interests of the Kingdom of God may well appear doubly precious to us. Amid the scenes of worldly distress and confusion witnessed around us, we are led to look for encouragement and consolation, not so much to the hope of final, perhaps speedy success and de liverance to our country, although this too is right and rea sonable, as to the remembrance of what He has done for His Church, and the greater blessings, we trust, he has yet in store for her. During the last year, the official acts which I have performed have been as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
