Excerpt from Journal of the Forty-Eighth Annual Council of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the State of North Carolina: Held in St. John's Church, Williamsborough on Wednesday May 18, Thursday May 19, Friday May 20, and Saturday May 21, and in Christ Church, Raleigh, on Wednesday June 22, and Thursday June 23, 1864 The circumstances at der which we meet in our present Annual Council to inquire into the state of the Church, and to devise measures for its welfare and increase, are well calculated to quicken our zeal in that good work, for the things of this life have never seemed more unsatisfactory and untrustworthy than at present, and the blessed interests of the Kingdom of God may well appear doubly precious to us. Amid the scenes of worldly distress and confusion witnessed around us, we are led to look for encouragement and consolation, not so much to the hope of final, perhaps speedy success and de liverance to our country, although this too is right and rea sonable, as to the remembrance of what He has done for His Church, and the greater blessings, we trust, he has yet in store for her.
