Book Description
"Fear is here for us to face, and adventure waits on the other side. " This is the story of a man who overcame alcoholism and turned himself into a sailor, both as a substitute to addiction and as a means to adventure. The story is told beginning with the vision and desire to sail on the ocean, through the training and education, buying a boat, gaining experience, and finally embarking on a 1000-nautical-mile journey home, singlehanded. An immersive nonfiction adventure story, "Becoming a Sailor" captures the scene as one would experience it. Readers will feel that they are sailing in the ocean on a dark and windy night, beating into a northwest wind and heavy seas while rounding Cape Canaveral. They will feel the cold water hit them in the face when waves crash into the little sailboat. They will experience the joy of a perfect day, sailing at hull-speed under bright sunshine across the open water halfway between Cuba and Florida. They will dive in the clear waters of The Bahamas and see the ancient and cavernous coral around which swim schools of blue tang, majestic queen angelfish, and the upside-down royal gramma. The reader will surf big waves in Puerto Rico, freedive into underwater caves in Florida, visit the remote Venezuelan outpost of Isla Aves, explore a huge and abandoned 1800's fort in the Florida Straits. Alligators will be encountered deep in the Okefenokee swamp. Manta rays, dolphin, sharks, Goliath grouper, and many colorful reef fish move in and out of the story."Becoming a Sailor" also goes into technical detail about the repairs and additions to Sobrius, a 1972 Dufour Arpege, as well as the techniques the author had to learn in order to sail singlehanded on multi-day passages. The narrative moves back and forth in time, from the author's adventures leading up to the purchase of Sobrius to the final journey, singlehanded, from Tampa Bay to The Dry Tortugas, then Miami, and finally to St Augustine. When the author departed on this passage, he had little experience, but had done much preparation and study. Still he was not certain about many things, including his ability, the ability of the vessel, and whether or not he could sleep in 20 minute increments for three or four days at a time. All the unknowns of a first singlehanded voyage lead to a fascinating experience which is shared with vivid description of both scene and mind in this gripping tale of adventure at sea.

Pages : 368

Book Description
What begins as the sheer desire for adventure turns into a spiritual quest as a young woman comes to terms with her family, her dreams, and her first love. Tania Aebi was an unambitious eighteen-year-old, a bicycle messenger in New York City by day, a Lower East Side barfly at night. In short, she was going nowhere—until her father offered her a challenge: Tania could choose either a college education or a twenty-six-foot sloop. The only catch was that if she chose the sailboat, she’d have to sail around the world—alone. She chose the boat, and for the next two and a half years and 27,000 miles, it was her home. With only her cat as companion, she discovered the wondrous beauties of the Great Barrier Reef and the death-dealing horrors of the Red Sea. She suffered through a terrifying collision with a tanker in the Mediterranean and a lightning storm off the coast of Gibraltar. And, ultimately, what began with the sheer desire for adventure turned into a spiritual quest as Tania came to terms with her troubled family life, fell in love for the first time, and—most of all—confronted her own needs, desires, dreams, and goals…

Sailor Without a Boat

Sailor Without a Boat PDF Author: Robert Bériault
Publisher: Createspace Independent Pub
ISBN: 9781466436138
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 346

Book Description
Follow the sailing adventures of Robert Beriault, when at the age of 57, he joins a sailing club for lessons and soon becomes an instructor. He dreams of sailing around the world and adopts the strategy of going at it one ocean at a time. Part travelogue and part sailing primer, Sailor Without a Boat tells the true story of how Robert chases after his dream. Candid, humorous advice is interspersed with hilarious tales from the Atlantic to the Pacific, as he recounts the idiosyncrasies of his skippers and fellow sailors. Among his many adventures, Robert crews for a reckless captain who pushes boat and crew beyond safety limits during a 3600-kilometre offshore passage. Searching the Internet for a transatlantic crossing, he almost sets out to sea with a Captain Bligh before jumping ship. Enjoying such places as the Caribbean and Cuba's stunningly beautiful Gardens of the Queen, Robert is boarded by gun-toting pirates; almost experiences an exploding yacht at sea; is embroiled in steamy soap operas; is medevaced by horse from the Guatemalan jungle; and fights 30-foot seas when crossing the Atlantic with Canada's sailing legend Derek Hatfield. All this, without ever having bought a boat!"

Sailing to Jessica

Sailing to Jessica PDF Author: Kelly Watts
Publisher: Marshall & Gilbert
ISBN: 098745482X
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
At 35-years old, Kelly and Paul Watts sold their home and quit their jobs to sail around the world, without any sailing experience. Two days after purchasing their forty-two-foot sloop, they got caught in a forty-knot gale off the coast of Cape Fear, NC. Their sails ripped; the engine overheated; the GPS broke; they suffered hypothermia and severe seasickness. And yet they persevered on their journey, discovering the playful sea lions of the Galapagos, the seductive dance of the Polynesian girls, and the primitive beat of Tuvaluan music, all while learning how to sail and repair their boat. They narrowly avoided a shark attack in Suwarrow, fled from suspected pirates off the coast of Ecuador, and hit a submerged container – the fear of all sailors - near Midway Island. What started as a search to find meaning to “life without children,” only strengthened their desire to have a family. After fertility attempts failed in America and New Zealand, they unexpectedly adopted a two-month old baby in Kiribati. And so began the adventure of raising a baby on a boat in the middle of the Pacific, battling Dengue Fever and an epidemic of e-coli., almost losing their lives in a 60-knot westerly gale and navigating through the maze of international adoption paperwork. Told from Kelly’s conversational point of view, “Sailing to Jessica” will inspire anyone who is searching for meaning in their life to get up and find it.
