Aliya PDF Author: Teresa Cannon
Publisher: Blue Dolphin Pub
ISBN: 9780646214085
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
This beautifully designed and photographed book will open your eyes to the magnificence and fragile destiny of the elephants of Sri Lanka. See them: -- Involved in human activities: "For ten nights, just at dusk, drummers, horn blowers, dancers, fire walkers and whip crackers accompany elaborately adorned elephants in procession from the temple". -- In the wild: "Peering into the dense scrub, we could just make out their grey bulk. Within seconds, and in absolute silence, they vanished". "An expansive and exquisitely produced large-format book which places the rich mythology of the Sri Lankan elephant in the context of a long and fascinating relationship with human societies which have, through the centuries, used the elephant for war, sport and work. The book leaves no aspect of elephant life and lore unexplored and leaves one with a deep respect for these giant beasts and the authors who have represented them in such an attractive and interesting way". -- Robert Hefner, The Canberra Times

Cinnamon & Elephants

Cinnamon & Elephants PDF Author: Lodewijk Wagenaar

Book Description
For more than 150 years from the conquest of Galle in 1640 to the British takeover in 1796 the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was the colonial ruler of the coastal areas of Sri Lanka, or Ceylon as it was then known. The VOC first came to the island at the invitation of the monarch of the kingdom of Kandy, who enlisted the Companys help in expelling the Portuguese occupiers. But after providing their assistance and at last accomplishing their goal in 1658, the Dutch had no intention of leaving. Quite the contrary, in fact, and in the years that followed the VOC completely isolated its former ally King Raja Sinha II and his successors from the outside world. They were forced to look on in impotent rage while the all-powerful Company exported the islands cinnamon and elephants, refusing to share with the inland kingdom any profits from the countrys resources. Cinnamon & Elephants uses objects from the Rijksmuseum collection and illustrations from other institutions to tell the story of Dutch colonial rule of Sri Lanka and the relationship between the VOC and Kandy. Cinnamon & Elephants is part of the Rijksmuseum Country Series published by the museums History Department. Each book in the series uses objects in the Rijksmuseum collection to explore the shared history of the Netherlands and one of the following countries: Indonesia, Japan, China, India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Ghana, Suriname and Brazil.

Book Description
Teach your children that elephants belong in the wild, that they are highly intelligent and endangered, through this engaging story. Eyesha the baby elephant visits the Minneriya Tank with her family for the first time to experience the annual Great Gathering. Curious and adventurous, she makes new friends, but is soon lost and in trouble. How will she find her way back to her family? Set in the dry zone of the island paradise Sri Lanka, this story introduces the reader to the world of the Asian wild elephant. It is illustrated by spectacular real-life photographs that capture the beauty of the region. All the descriptions and background information is researched and accurate. Elephants, like so many other wild animals in the world, are endangered and only about 6000 now survive in their natural habitat in Sri Lanka. The rise of tourism, habitat encroachment by villages and an increased demand for 'tamed' elephants in pageants has lead to the escalation of the human - elephant conflict in the country. This book hopes to provide a glimpse into the behaviour and lifestyle of these majestic and intelligent creatures, who are among the cleverest in the animal kingdom. The saying 'Elephants never forget' has been proved true by scientists who have studied the physical and emotional developments of these giants. Foreigners and locals who wish to see these animals are encouraged to visit the Minneriya National Park during the months of April - October to experience one of the wonders of the natural world, the Great Elephant Gathering. This annual event brings together hundreds of elephants from all over the island and it is a phenomenon not to be missed by the nature lover. So enjoy the book, and book the next flight to Sri Lanka to see for yourself this annual gathering of the great . . .

Elephant Complex

Elephant Complex PDF Author: John Gimlette
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0385351283
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 432

Book Description
No one sees the world quite like John Gimlette. As The New York Times once noted, “he writes with enormous wit, indignation, and a heightened sense of the absurd.” Writing for both the adventurer and the armchair traveler, he has an eye for unusually telling detail, a sense of wonder, and compelling curiosity for the inside story. This time, he travels to Sri Lanka, a country only now emerging from twenty-six years of civil war. Delving deep into the nation’s story, Gimlette provides us with an astonishing, multifaceted portrait of the island today. His travels reveal the country as never before. Beginning in the exuberant capital, Colombo (“a hint of anarchy everywhere”), he ventures out in all directions: to the dry zones where the island’s 5,800 wild elephants congregate around ancient reservoirs; through cinnamon country with its Portuguese forts; to the “Bible Belt” of Buddhism—the tsunami-ravaged southeast coast; then up into the great green highlands (“the garden in the sky”) and Kandy, the country’s eccentric, aristocratic Shangri-la. Along the way, a wild and often desperate history takes shape, a tale of great colonies (Arab, Portuguese, British, and Dutch) and of the cultural divisions that still divide this society. Before long, we’re in Jaffna and the Vanni, crucibles of the recent conflict. These areas—the hottest, driest, and least hospitable—have been utterly devastated by war and are only now struggling to their feet. But this is also a story of friendship and remarkable encounters. In the course of his journey, Gimlette meets farmers, war heroes, ancient tribesmen, world-class cricketers, terrorists, a former president, old planters, survivors of great massacres—and perhaps some of their perpetrators. That’s to say nothing of the island’s beguiling fauna: elephants, crocodiles, snakes, storks, and the greatest concentration of leopards on Earth. Here is a land of extravagant beauty and profound devastation, of ingenuity and catastrophe, possessed of both a volatile past and an uncertain future—a place capable of being at once heavenly and hellish—all brought to vibrant, fascinating life here on the page.

The Elephant Tourism Business

The Elephant Tourism Business PDF Author: Eric Laws
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 1789245869
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Elephant tourism is a growing activity in many countries across Asia and Africa and is popular with tourists from all parts of the world. Elephant tourism has grown rapidly, providing the only viable way for elephants and their owners to survive since the banning of logging. Old logging camps have been developed into sanctuaries for some elephants, but many other camps were established as entertainment centres, resulting in serious welfare issues for the elephants and their mahouts. The profits from elephant tourism in Asia have encouraged African operators to follow a similar business model. This book draws attention to the need for a comprehensive and rigorous focus on local solutions to improve the welfare of captive elephants, their mahouts and local residents, and to enhance tourists' experiences of elephant tourism.
