The Microbiology of Nuclear Waste Disposal

The Microbiology of Nuclear Waste Disposal PDF Author: Jonathan R. Lloyd
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0128186968
Category : Science

Pages : 378

Book Description
The Microbiology of Nuclear Waste Disposal is a state-of-the-art reference featuring contributions focusing on the impact of microbes on the safe long-term disposal of nuclear waste. This book is the first to cover this important emerging topic, and is written for a wide audience encompassing regulators, implementers, academics, and other stakeholders. The book is also of interest to those working on the wider exploitation of the subsurface, such as bioremediation, carbon capture and storage, geothermal energy, and water quality. Planning for suitable facilities in the U.S., Europe, and Asia has been based mainly on knowledge from the geological and physical sciences. However, recent studies have shown that microbial life can proliferate in the inhospitable environments associated with radioactive waste disposal, and can control the long-term fate of nuclear materials. This can have beneficial and damaging impacts, which need to be quantified. - Encompasses expertise from both the bio and geo disciplines, aiming to foster important collaborations across this disciplinary divide - Includes reviews and research papers from leading groups in the field - Provides helpful guidance in light of plans progressing worldwide for geological disposal facilities - Includes timely research for planning and safety case development

Borehole Disposal Facilities for Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources

Borehole Disposal Facilities for Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources PDF Author: IAEA
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
ISBN: 9201311230
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
This Safety Guide provides recommendations on the safe disposal of disused sealed radioactive sources in borehole disposal facilities. Sealed radioactive sources are used all over the world for a wide range of purposes, in areas such as health, industry, research and agriculture. These sources are usually managed safely while in use, but States often experience challenges in their management once the sources reach the end of their useful lives. Even though they may no longer emit sufficient radiation for their intended purpose, disused sources are radioactive and potentially hazardous, and they need to be managed as radioactive waste. Written for regulators and others involved in the development and management of borehole disposal facilities, the objective of this Safety Guide is to provide recommendations on the commissioning, operation, closure, institutional control and regulation of borehole disposal facilities for disused sealed radioactive sources, and small volumes of low and intermediate level secondary waste generated during the management of these sources. This Safety Guide can also be used as a basis for reassessing and, where appropriate, upgrading the safety of existing borehole disposal facilities.

Risk and Safety Analysis of Nuclear Systems

Risk and Safety Analysis of Nuclear Systems PDF Author: John C. Lee
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118043456
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 504

Book Description
The book has been developed in conjunction with NERS 462, a course offered every year to seniors and graduate students in the University of Michigan NERS program. The first half of the book covers the principles of risk analysis, the techniques used to develop and update a reliability data base, the reliability of multi-component systems, Markov methods used to analyze the unavailability of systems with repairs, fault trees and event trees used in probabilistic risk assessments (PRAs), and failure modes of systems. All of this material is general enough that it could be used in non-nuclear applications, although there is an emphasis placed on the analysis of nuclear systems. The second half of the book covers the safety analysis of nuclear energy systems, an analysis of major accidents and incidents that occurred in commercial nuclear plants, applications of PRA techniques to the safety analysis of nuclear power plants (focusing on a major PRA study for five nuclear power plants), practical PRA examples, and emerging techniques in the structure of dynamic event trees and fault trees that can provide a more realistic representation of complex sequences of events. The book concludes with a discussion on passive safety features of advanced nuclear energy systems under development and approaches taken for risk-informed regulations for nuclear plants.
