Lost Christianities

Lost Christianities PDF Author: Bart D. Ehrman
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780195182491
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
The early Christian Church was a chaos of contending beliefs. In Lost Christianities, Bart D. Ehrman offers a fascinating look at these early forms of Christianity and shows how they came to be suppressed, reformed, or forgotten. All of these groups insisted that they upheld the teachings of Jesus and his apostles, and they all possessed writings that bore out their claims, books reputedly produced by Jesus' own followers. Scrupulously researched and lucidly written, Lost Christianities is an eye-opening account of politics, power, and the clash of ideas among Christians in the decades before one group came to see its views prevail.

Those Feet

Those Feet PDF Author: David Winner
Publisher: ABRAMS
ISBN: 1468309293
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
This follow-up to Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Soccer is “an enchanting love letter to English football” (The Daily Telegraph). In this playful, witty, and highly original look at English soccer, David Winner, author of the acclaimed Brilliant Orange, journeys to the heart of an essential English pastime and sheds new light on the true nature of a rapidly changing game that was never really meant to be beautiful. With the same insightful eye he brought to his bestselling study of Dutch soccer, Winner shows how Victorian sexual anxiety underlies England’s many World Cup failures. He reveals the connection between Roy Keane and a soldier who never lived but died in the “Charge of the Light Brigade.” And he demonstrates how thick mud and wet leather shaped the contours of the English soul. “It’s neither a history of the game nor a memoir, instead exploring the interplay between sport, history, and national character . . . For thinking fans of the game, this is exquisitely pleasurable reading . . . As [Winner] finds acceptance, and even fondness, for the English game, his insight, humor, warmth, and enthusiasm place him in the top echelon of soccer writers.” —Booklist (starred review) “Thank God for David Winner . . . With an easy wit, Winner traces the game back to its roots and the results are as intriguing as they are amusing . . . A marvelous book.” —Duncan White, FourFourTwo

Married a Virgin

Married a Virgin PDF Author: Rutendo Samantha Nazitwere
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1514455072
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 49

Book Description
At a young age the Lord told me that I would write books and that my first book would be a testimony of how the Lord helped me to get married a virgin; he said it was going to be my duty to tell other ladies to walk in purity because that is what he desires for them all. At that age I did not even know I would get married a virgin but anything the Lord says comes to pass. Married a Virgin hopefully will help young women understand why the Lord desires us to walk in purity and resist the lusts of the flesh (1 john 2:16). A lot of young people today have multiple sexual partners and they do not understand that they are sinning against their own bodies and in the process forming ungodly soul ties. Children as young as 10 are sexually active because society does not dispute immorality. Engaging in sexual activity is actually viewed as a norm. As a counselor ,I have spoken to a lot of young children and this is their view. The social media, movies, and music potray sex in various forms thereby creating curiosity to explore sex at a premature age. Guidance ,counsel and advice are therefore important in a young persons life. Corinthians 6:18 says, Keep on running away from sexual immorality. Any other sin that a person commits is outside his body but the person who sins sexually sins against his own body. There are many Christian women who are struggling with sex outside marriage but the Lord Jehovah is willing to forgive those who truly repent and change their lifestyles. God showed me a vision that made me understand the dangers of having sex outside of marriage in this generation. A lot of immorality is taking place in the world today. I do not think I am better than anyone else but my goal is to help people understand the importance of abiding by Gods commandments.

A Mind of Its Own

A Mind of Its Own PDF Author: David M. Friedman
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439136084
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
Whether enemy or ally, demon or god, the source of satisfaction or the root of all earthly troubles, the penis has forced humanity to wrestle with its enduring mysteries. Here, in an enlightening and entertaining cultural study, is a book that gives context to the central role of the penis in Western civilization. A man can hold his manhood in his hand, but who is really gripping whom? Is the penis the best in man -- or the beast? How is man supposed to use it? And when does that use become abuse? Of all the bodily organs, only the penis forces man to confront such contradictions: something insistent yet reluctant, a tool that creates but also destroys, a part of the body that often seems apart from the body. This is the conundrum that makes the penis both hero and villain in a drama that shapes every man -- and mankind along with it. In A Mind of Its Own, David M. Friedman shows that the penis is more than a body part. It is an idea, a conceptual but flesh-and-blood measuring stick of man's place in the world. That men have a penis is a scientific fact; how they think about it, feel about it, and use it is not. It is possible to identify the key moments in Western history when a new idea of the penis addressed the larger mystery of man's relationship with it and changed forever the way that organ was conceived of and put to use. A Mind of Its Own brilliantly distills this complex and largely unexamined story. Deified by the pagan cultures of the ancient world and demonized by the early Roman church, the organ was later secularized by pioneering anatomists such as Leonardo da Vinci. After being measured "scientifically" in an effort to subjugate some races while elevating others, the organ was psychoanalyzed by Sigmund Freud. As a result, the penis assumed a paradigmatic role in psychology -- whether the patient was equipped with the organ or envied those who were. Now, after being politicized by feminism and exploited in countless ways by pop culture, the penis has been medicalized. As no one has before him, Friedman shows how the arrival of erection industry products such as Viagra is more than a health or business story. It is the latest -- and perhaps final -- chapter in one of the longest sagas in human history: the story of man's relationship with his penis. A Mind of Its Own charts the vicissitudes of that relationship through its often amusing, occasionally alarming, and never boring course. With intellectual rigor and a healthy dose of wry humor, David M. Friedman serves up one of the most thought-provoking, significant, and readable cultural works in years.
