Book Description
The document provides an up-to-date recommendations made to WHO by the experts of WHO consultations on discriminating concentrations of insecticides for monitoring resistance in adult mosquito vectors. It is an outcome of a WHO multi-centre study (2017–2021) performed by 23 laboratories in different regions and the WHO expert consultations that made recommendations to WHO on insecticide discriminating concentrations for monitoring resistance in Anopheles and Aedes spp. The document describes a new WHO bottle bioassay method for testing susceptibility of mosquitoes to insecticides that are not suitable for impregnation on filter papers and makes recommendations for future scientific research on development of methods and procedures for testing resistance against insecticides with new, novel or distinct modes of action. Making use of the recommendations made to WHO by the experts, WHO will soon update current WHO test methods and procedures and publish standard operating procedures for testing insecticide resistance in mosquitoes, which in turn will be useful to the national vector-borne disease control programmes, in particular the entomological surveillance units, and the research community for monitoring insecticide resistance in field populations of mosquito vectors of disease. The document will also be useful to academia, the pesticide regulatory agencies and the pesticide industry for further innovation in this area and to address the research questions.

Planetary health approaches to understand and control vector-borne diseases
Author: Kimberley Fornace
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 900468865X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 446
Book Description
Mosquitoes transmit many of the pathogens that cause zoonotic diseases from wildlife and livestock to people, with devasting consequences for public health. The factors affecting the ecology and evolution of the transmission dynamics of these mosquito-borne pathogens can be revealed using multidisciplinary research approaches. This 7th volume of the ECVD series focuses on the ecological factors that determine the transmission dynamics of mosquito-borne pathogens naturally circulating between animals of different taxa and their importance for human health. The authors revise the current knowledge on the pathogens that affect wildlife, including those maintained in captivity, as well as the use of cutting-edge techniques for the identification of potential vectors of these pathogens. In addition, this volume explores the role of factors related to global change, including changes in landscape use, deforestation and urbanization, as major drivers of the distribution of mosquito vectors and the dynamics of pathogen transmission. Finally, updated information on the approaches used to identify and control mosquito-borne diseases is presented, with a particular focus on those affecting humans. In summary, this book provides an updated review of the different mosquito-borne pathogens affecting animals and their public health relevance.
