Making the Heavens Speak
Author: Peter Sloterdijk
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1509547517
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 203
Book Description
The idea of a connection between poetry and religion is as old as civilization. Homer consulted the Olympian gods on the fate of the fighters on the plain before Troy, and the poet made the heavenly ones speak. It was through poetry that the gods were brought within reach of human hearing. In the centuries after Homer, the Athenian stage became the setting where gods made their poetic interventions, resolving human impasses and contributing to the emotional synchronization of the public life of the city. Sloterdijk argues that, as with the culture of the Ancient Greeks, all religions inscribe a kind of “theopoetry” at the heart of their cultural life and thought, even as they strenuously obscure these poetic origins through the cultivation and enforcement of orthodox norms. Sloterdijk also shows how, in conditions of religious pluralism, religions poetically reshape themselves to accommodate the demands of the religious marketplace. This highly original study of the poetic devices that inform accounts of the otherworldly offers a new interpretation of religious practice and its theological elaboration through history, as well as a fresh perspective on our contemporary age in which collective life, interwoven with imaginative fabrications, is fraying under critical stress.

Run to Win the Prize
Author: Thomas R. Schreiner
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433542730
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
Scripture's commands to persevere, and warnings of the consequences if we fail, have been met with apathy by some, and led others to doubt the state of their salvation. The fearful and eternal nature of these issues warrants careful examination of what the Bible says about perseverance. Thomas Schreiner once again tackles this difficult topic in Run to Win the Prize. Clarifying misunderstandings stemming from his more detailed treatment in The Race Set Before Us (IVP 2001), Schreiner draws together an illuminating overview of biblical teaching on the doctrine of perseverance. Schreiner details how God directs the collective warnings and exhortations of Scripture toward believers as a means of preservation. We are to think of the call to persevere in light of the initial call to faith, both agents by which God leads us to final salvation. Those looking for a general treatment of the doctrine of perseverance will profit from the challenges and assurances in Run to Win the Prize.

To My Egyptian Friend
Author: Eloise Barreira
Publisher: Clube de Autores
ISBN:
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 68
Book Description
I’ve learned that Egypt is a symbol of all that can be described as bad, sin, the place where God is not, after all, and so I understood that all Egyptians should have the same description. But I always wanted to meet an Egyptian. But how? Easy nowadays ... And then I went out collecting all the names I know until I found a Mostafa. The idea of Arabian man I had is that one who has a thousand women around him, being served. This one though, I found alone, desolate, unhappy, sick, unemployed and above all, he was searching for true love. The following poems are dedicated to this friend, my Egyptian friend and you will realize that the idea I had was totally wrong. Did he find the true love that he was looking for? Was he found? Read them and find out... This is the real story of Sunshine from Egypt and his princess, the Fairy Passionata from an ocean of distance.
