Excerpt from Rules and Regulations of the State Insane Asylum, Stockton, Cal The Superintendent is the chief executive officer of the Asylum and the head of the institution. He shall have the general superintendence of the buildings and grounds, together with the furniture, fixtures, and stock. He shall have the direction and control of all persons within and belong ing to the Asylum, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors, and shall be held responsible for the general conduct of the affairs of the Asylum. It shall be his duty to determine, under the direction of the Board, the number of attendants and assistants necessary to be employed, and to prescribe their respective duties. He shall exert himself to maintain order and discipline in all departments, by causing the rules and regula tions to be strictly observed, and taking care that all officers and employés perform their duties faithfully and punctually. The appointment, suspension, and discharge of employés is a duty of the Superintendent, and rests in his hands, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors.
