100 New York Painters

100 New York Painters PDF Author: Cynthia Maris Dantzic
Publisher: Schiffer Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
This stunning book is the long-awaited result of an extensive review of New York painters and their widely diverse works. It presents an overview of styles, mediums, subjects, even philosophies of art found in galleries, museums, and artists' studios of present-day New York, the oft-acknowledged Art Capital of the contemporary world. Although you may recognize the names and works of many, this company of 100 painters also features works by artists less celebrated, though no less deserving of attention. Expect to find recent works, as well as paintings from an earlier period of an artist's oeuvre -- as near as Kelynn Alder's "Coney Island," painted specifically for this book, and as distant as George Tooker's iconic allegory, "Subway," painted in 1950. Brief biographical sketches accompany each artist's work, providing insight into their emotional and philosophical connection with art as well as their schooling and accomplishments. Experience for yourself this visual feast showcasing the unique works of 100 gifted New York painters. This book is a must-have addition for the library of any art connoisseur and/or collector.

Theatrical Designers

Theatrical Designers PDF Author: Thomas Mikotowicz
Publisher: Greenwood
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
This book provides biographical and analytical data on significant historical and contemporary practitioners and theorists of the theatrical design field who have contributed to the development of the art. Beginning with a historical survey on the evolution of theatrical design, the volume features entries on some 270 set, costume, lighting, and theatre building designers, mainly dating from the fifteenth century to the present. Coverage is international, with a necessary emphasis on the United States and Western Europe. Essays of varying length describe and evaluate the career and contributions of each designer, providing information on positions, productions, and awards and generally ending with sources for further reading. Particularly valuable are the detailed chronological listings of design credits given as available, mainly for prominent twentieth century figures. Appendixes to the volume list the designers chronologically by birth date and also by country of birth. The volume ends with an annotated general bibliography on theatre design and designers and an index. The only reference book specifically dedicated to theatrical designers, its coverage will significantly extend the information contained in more general works on theatre presently available for library research.

Jozef Israëls : Son of the Ancient People

Jozef Israëls : Son of the Ancient People PDF Author: Jozef Israëls
Publisher: University of Washington Press
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
Jozef Israels (1824-1911), famous for his portrayals of life in Holland's fishing villages and of scenes from Jewish and peasant life, was the eminence grise of the Hague School. Contemporaries saw him as a latterday Rembrandt, whose art gave his subjects a voice. This representative and extensive survey of his life and work marks the 175th anniversary of Israels's birth. Over one hundred paintings, watercolors, drawings, and etchings are illustrated in color and discussed. Many of these works, drawn from public and private collections in Holland and abroad, have not been exhibited for years. The introductory essays focus on Israels's career and artistic development, his affinity with Rembrandt, and his Jewish background.
