Book Description
Excerpt from Love Intrigues of Royal Courts Seldom, too, has a woman been more richly dowered by nature for the conquest of man. Even as the girl-wife of the imbecile and brutal Peter she had few rivals in beauty in all Russia. Here is the charming picture she draws Of herself, arrayed for a ball. I put up my hair, which was very long and thick and beautiful, at the back Of my head, and tied it with a white ribbon, en queue a'e Renard. I set one rose with its buds and leaves, exact imitation of nature, in my hair, and another in my corsage. A ruff of very white gauze was about my neck, and I wore cuffs and aprons of the same gauze. My bodice was Of white gros de T ours silk (i had a very good figure at that time), with a petticoat Of the same over a very small hoop. I never in my life remember having been so complimented by all as on that occasion. I was said to be as beautiful as the day and absolutely dazzling. Book Description
Excerpt from The Royal Dukes and Princesses of the Family of George, Vol. 2: III, a View of Court Life and Manners for Seventy Years Passing now from her childhood, we next see Princess Charlotte as an attractive young girl, wayward, easily led by kindness, and driven into obstinacy and rebellion by harsh treatment. It was thus she presented herself to an observer at her mother's house. This introduces us to a new epoch of her short life, when she was driven to act for herself and in hostility to her father while clinging as long as she could, or was allowed to do so, to her mother's cause. The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern European History, 1350-1750

The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern European History, 1350-1750 PDF Author: Hamish M. Scott
Publisher: Oxford Handbooks
ISBN: 019959726X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 769

Book Description
This Handbook re-examines the concept of early modern history in a European and global context. The term 'early modern' has been familiar, especially in Anglophone scholarship, for four decades and is securely established in teaching, research, and scholarly publishing. More recently, however, the unity implied in the notion has fragmented, while the usefulness and even the validity of the term, and the historical periodisation which it incorporates, have been questioned. The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern European History, 1350-1750 provides an account of the development of the subject during the past half-century, but primarily offers an integrated and comprehensive survey of present knowledge, together with some suggestions as to how the field is developing. It aims both to interrogate the notion of "early modernity" itself and to survey early modern Europe as an established field of study. The overriding aim will be to establish that 'early modern' is not simply a chronological label but possesses a substantive integrity. Volume II is devoted to "Cultures and Power", opening with chapters on philosophy, science, art and architecture, music, and the Enlightenment. Subsequent sections examine 'Europe beyond Europe', with the transformation of contact with other continents during the first global age, and military and political developments, notably the expansion of state power.
