Nation and Word, 1770–1850

Nation and Word, 1770–1850 PDF Author: Mary Anne Perkins
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351915886
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 361

Book Description
The emergence of the modern nation state in Europe and the accompanying rise in national consciousness led to a heightened awareness of the close relationship between language and national identity. In this book the author shows that this relationship was expressed through the themes and figures of a ’language’ of nationhood, drawn from a common European cultural heritage, particularly the Classical and Christian traditions. Despite its common roots, this language became the medium through which the diversity of national characters was expressed. The idea of the divine Word, for example, enabled the sacredness and power of national language to be celebrated. The identification of poet and prophet gave Romantic nationalists an authority to speak for and to the nation, and the theme of the Chosen People was often adopted to express the elect status of a writer’s own nation. In conclusion, it is shown that this language of nationhood remains a powerful force at the end of the twentieth century.

Santa Fe

Santa Fe PDF Author: Tim McNeese
Publisher: Infobase Publishing
ISBN: 143810121X
Category : New Mexico
Languages : en
Pages : 117

Book Description
In the centuries following the discovery of the Americas in 1492, representatives of the great Spanish Empire attempted to establish the thumbprint of European colonialism in the New World. Their exploits would destroy vast Indian civilizations, but with each fall, stories of other native kingdoms of greater wealth and power were told. One story pointed to the lands north of Mexico, a wasteland of scrubby deserts; sandstone mesas; forbidding, snow-capped mountains; and tens of thousands of Indians living in adobe apartments the Spanish would call pueblos. The Spanish search for the mythical cities of gold would, in time, lead to the establishment of a colony known as New Mexico. This book is the story of Santa Fe, New Mexico's colonial capital and the oldest capital city in the U.S., a territory whose enthralling physical and cultural landscapes were shaped by its Indian heritage and subsequent Spanish influence.
