THE GREATEST

THE GREATEST PDF Author: MARK MEGNA
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1493187813
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 183

Book Description
"The Greatest" uses an "absolute adjusting slugging percentage" relative to the era in which each player played to rank the greatest players in history. This eliminates the problem of comparing statistics due to the dead ball era, rule changes such as the mound being raised and the strike zone widened from 1963 to 1968, domed stadiums, and the enhanced vitamin era of the 1990's and 2000's. The book also used "absolute defensive statistics" to determine who the greatest defensive players were at each position. Contrary to public opinion it was discovered that Derek Jeter, for example, was a poor defensive shortstop due to poor statistical range. Finally, the book ranks the greatest pitchers in history by comparing the earned run average relative to the era in which each pitched. Greg Maddux, for example, had two of the top five single seasons of all time using this unique objective method.

Baseball Ratings

Baseball Ratings PDF Author: Charles F. Faber
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476620644
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
In this third edition of Baseball Ratings, author Charles Faber combines the second edition ("great fodder for arguments"--Booklist) with his book on 19th-century greats, Baseball Pioneers ("very impressive"--Reference and User Services Quarterly; "a notable and ... worthwhile addition"--ARBA), updating the ratings and expanding the commentary in each. The result, Baseball Ratings: The All-Time Best Players at Each Position, 1876 to the Present, is that rarest of rankings books--a time-tested, comprehensive reference work that invites reading. Batters, fielders and pitchers from all major leagues since 1876 are ranked by position and, for pitchers, according to role (e.g., starter, middle reliever, closer) according to career, peak, and per-season achievement. All big league players with at least five years of eligibility are rated, and appendices identify underrated and overrated players, rate multiposition players, and sort the great by handedness.

Outrageous Fortune

Outrageous Fortune PDF Author: James F. Vail
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786411260
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, enshrines some players whose worthiness seems questionable to the game's most knowledgeable fans--and excludes others whose credentials are remarkable. Critics of the current voting system, which uses two sets of electors and has been used for over sixty years, argue that it is too subjective--the only measurable requirement is that the player have at least ten years of major league service at the position for which he is selected. This critical and statistical study identifies the errors of selection and omission in Hall of Fame voting. It proposes a method that adapts objective, statistical criteria to the current selection process. The method preserves positives that exist in the current subjective method, while simultaneously reducing the likelihood of injustices to players, managers, and Negro Leaguers.
