Son of Andalusia

Son of Andalusia PDF Author: Cyril Brian Morris
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 520

Book Description
A pathbreaking account of the influence and context of Andalusian life and art in the poetry and drama of Federico Garcia Lorca. Andalusia was the central feature and influence in the life and writings of the twentieth-century author, musician, and artist, Federico Garcia Lorca. Rooted in his native region, which both captivated and shaped him, Lorca maintained that "The better a writer learns how to interpret the landscape, the greater the artist he will be." Blessed with an acute historical sense of a region where the past is both present and enduring, Lorca proved himself sensitive and articulate enough to interpret "the emotion of the landscape" in all of his creative work. For Lorca, Andalusia was a landscape not only of place but of people. Through exhaustive research and painstaking readings in a wide range of anthologies of Andalusian folk culture and collections of popular verse, author C. Brian Morris reveals how Lorca transformed and veiled real people and real places in his poetry and drama. Exploring subjects ranging from medieval ballads to flower and plant lore, he further investigates the relationship between Lorca and the writings of other Andalusian-born authors, as well as traditional Andalusian poetry and song. Juxtaposing this material with well-chosen quotations from Lorca's works, Morris provides myriad examples of analogy and reminiscence that will inform and enlighten both general readers and Lorca specialists.

Dissonances of Modernity

Dissonances of Modernity PDF Author: Irene Gómez-Castellano
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469651939
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
Dissonances of Modernity illuminates the ways in which music, as an artifact, a practice, and a discourse redefines established political, social, gender, and cultural conventions in Modern Spain. Using the notion of dissonance as a point of departure, the volume builds on the insightful approaches to the study of music and society offered by previous analyses in regards to the central position they give to identity as a socially and historically constructed concept, and continues their investigation on the interdependence of music and society in the Iberian Peninsula. While other serious studies of the intersections of music and literature in Spain have focused on contemporary usage, Dissonances of Modernity looks back across the centuries, seeking the role of music in the very formation of identity in the peninsula. The volume's historical horizon reaches from the nineteenth-century War of Africa to the Catalan working class revolutions and Enric Granados' central role in Catalan identity; from Francisco Barbieri's Madrid to the Wagnerian's influence in Benito Perez Galdos' prose; and from the predicaments surrounding national anthems to the use of the figure of Carmen in Francoist' cinema. This volume is a timely scholarly addition that contemplates not only a broad corpus that innovatively comprises popular and high culture--zarzuelas, choruses of industrial workers, opera, national anthems--but also their inter-dependence in the artists' creativity.

Carnivals and Dreams

Carnivals and Dreams PDF Author: Louise S. Milne
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 662

Book Description
Milne's main ideas revolve around the idea that the concept and practice of carnival was supressed over the course of the era in which Bruegel lived. The result of this repression led to the privatisation of carnivalesque urges, which in turn led to the proto-surrealism of Bruegel (and of course of Bosch just before him). This, the author argues, is one of the main sources for modern nightmares.

Handbook of Spanish Popular Culture

Handbook of Spanish Popular Culture PDF Author: Edward F. Stanton
Publisher: Greenwood
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Spanish popular culture is one of the richest in the world. The absence of an efficient ruling class has allowed the people to stamp their personality on all major aspects of the country's life. This book describes the peculiar Spanish feeling for death and tragedy in popular religious practices, music and the bullfight; the fiesta sense of life, so foreign to the work ethic of other Western countries; the oral tradition that has managed to survive into the post-industrial age with its creative use of slang, proverbs and obscenity; popular literature, the press, radio, television and the movies. Students and scholars will appreciate the first comprehensive treatment of Spanish popular culture in a single volume. The author has done first-hand research in all the major regions of Spain and has compiled a list of major archives and resource centers. An extensive bibliography on the major fields of popular Spanish culture is included at the end of each chapter.
