Stress and Women Physicians

Book Description
This book is about the well-being of today's female physicians. The woman who chooses medicine as a career has a challenge that is in many ways unique, yet somehow similar to other women who are breaking the barriers in many professions. The increasing number of career women is an outgrowth of the women's and anti-discrimination movements which have not yet freed the majority of women from their previous sociali zation in which women were wives and homemakers. Many men, and of women, are as yet unprepared for the major changes in the roles women which have occurred in the last two decades. Men, whose wives and mothers have held the traditional roles of this century in our industrial society, are the mainstream of medicine. Women physicians, clearly the minority, have been considered unusual anomalies and are thought to lack impact on the whole of medicine. The women who choose medicine do not necessarily see themselves as feminists, or even as beneficients of the women's movement. Their numbers are increasing rapidly, faster than societal norms and ideas can keep up with them. Discrimination has existed, and will continue to exist, at least on an individual basis, but, hopefully, the institutional barriers and myths are being struck down with the increased numbers of women physicians. Women physicians, and the stressors they face, will change as their numbers increase.

Women in Israel

Women in Israel PDF Author: Yael Atzmon
Publisher: Transaction Publishers
ISBN: 1412841658
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 490

Book Description
This series of the Israel Sociological Association, whose object is to identify and clarify the major themes that occupy social research in Israel today, gathers together the best of Israeli social science investigation that was previously scattered in a wide variety of international journals. Volume VI presents a composite portrait of women's lives in Israel, analyzing their status hi the family, at work, in the military, and in political life. The editors start from the premise that Israel is simultaneously a modem industrial society and a traditional one with regard to the structure and centrality of family life. It is governed by both secular law based on the principle of equality between men and women, and religious law that imposes a different legal status between the sexes. Many of the contributors analyze the social contradictions of this paradox and how they shape women's options and experiences. This is the first compendium offering a comprehensive account of women in Israeli society. As such it should be of great interest to people hi women's studies, sociology, and Middle Eastern affairs. Contents (partial): "Economic Growth and Female Labour: The Case of Israel," "Gender, Ethnicity, and Income Inequality: The Israeli Experience," "The Status of Women in Academia," "Scientists in Organizations: Discrimination Processes in an Internal Labor Market," "Economic and Familial Roles of Women in Israel," "Is Resource Theory Equally Applicable to Wives and Husbands?" "The Social Status of War Widows," "Getting Powerful with Age: Changes in Women over the Life Cycle," "Family, Gender, and Attitudes toward Retirement," "Ritual, Morality, and Gender: The Religious Lives of Oriental Jewish Women hi Jersusalem," "Women hi Legislatures: Israel in a Comparative Perspective," "Women and Politics: The Case of Israel," "Abortion in Israel: Social Demand and Political Responses," "Role System under Stress: Sex Roles in War," "Relative Deprivation hi the Labor Market," "Women and Language in Israel," "Teachers' Selections of Boys and Girls as Prominent Pupils," "Theories of Gender Equality: Lessons from the Israeli Kibbutz," "Ethnic Identity and the Position of Women among Arabs hi an Israeli Town."

The Impaired Physician

The Impaired Physician PDF Author: Stephen Scheiber
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468443046
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 215

Book Description
The Oath of Hippocrates, administered to generations of physicians as they embark on their profession, begins: "I will look upon him who shall have taught me this art even as one of my parents. I will share my substance with him, and I will supply his necessities, if he be in need. " Despite that solemn promise, we have too often ignored or neglected the physician in trouble. Even if we could put aside the human concerns of one physician for an impaired colleague (can our profession truly permit that?), we must concede that our society can ill afford it. This book, which has been assembled and edited by Stephen C. Scheiber and Brian B. Doyle, may be a lifesaver for the doctor in trouble and will be a health saver for the population of our country. A land which decried the lack of physicians a quarter century ago and spent the vast resources to double the number of graduates in medicine, cannot permit a tenth of all doctors to be out of commission. That would be a large, and for the most part preventable, addition to the cost of health care in America. In this book, Scheiber and Doyle have gathered the expertise of many psychiatrists who are knowledgeable about the impaired physi cian.
