The Shuram-Wonoka excursion, the largest documented negative carbon isotope anomaly, occurs globally in the Ediacaran. Precise determination of the duration of the Shuram-Wonoka excursion is pivotal in understanding its controversial origin. Here, we present a detailed paleo- and rock magnetic, cyclostratigraphic and carbon isotope study of a complete record of the Shuram-Wonoka excursion in the Doushantuo Formation at the Dongdahe section in eastern Yunnan Province, South China. Although paleomagnetic results indicate a Cretaceous thermoviscous remanent magnetization related to the Yanshanian orogeny in South China, careful mineralogical examination shows that variations in the concentration of detrital magnetite can faithfully record astronomically-forced climate oscillations in the Ediacaran. Multi-taper method spectral analysis of magnetic susceptibility and anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) cyclostratigraphies yields significant peaks at consistent frequencies. Based on the ratios of their wavelengths, these peaks are assigned to a suite of Milankovitch cycles (long eccentricity, short eccentricity, obliquity and precession), permitting the sediment accumulation rate of the Doushantuo Formation to be calculated as 1.03 cm/kyr. By extrapolation, a 9.4 +/- 1.0 Myr duration is suggested for the entire Shuram-Wonoka excursion in South China. This result is in good agreement with independent estimates from exposures in North America and South Australia, thus supporting a primary origin for the Shuram-Wonoka excursion. In combination with published geochronological data, we suggest that the age of the excursion's onset is possibly ca. 560 Ma, thus providing a robust chronostratigraphic framework for evaluating the relationship between the excursion and the life evolution in the Ediacaran.

Lithostratigraphic, magnetostratigraphic, and rock magnetic cyclostratigraphic data were combined to create a high-resolution chronology of 636 m of Messinian- middle Pleistocene siliciclastic marine deposits exposed in the Stirone River, northern Italy. These deposits are part of a growth section on the forelimb of the Salsomaggiore anticline. Magnetostratigraphic analysis of 146 oriented samples at 41 stratigraphic horizons supplements published studies to create a composite magnetostratigraphy correlated to the geomagnetic polarity timescale. Magnetic susceptibility (chi) was measured for unoriented samples, collected every meter, and subjected to Multi-Taper Method (MTM) spectral analysis. The resultant power spectra revealed significant peaks associated with 405 kyr eccentricity, 41 kyr obliquity, and 23 kyr precession Milankovitch cycles. Magnetic susceptibility (chi) data tuned to the 41 kyr obliquity cycle, and anchored at a well-known biostratigraphic horizon assigns cyclostratigraphic absolute time in the Stirone section between 3.00-1.78 Ma, where stratigraphic positions of the magnetic chron boundaries are poorly defined. This cyclostratigraphy reveals two important features of the Stirone section. First, the age of an important biostratigraphically-determined unconformity at the base of the C2An. 1n chron is 200 kyr older than previously determined. Second, forelimb rotation rates for the Salsomaggiore anticline are shown to be unsteady at 41 kyr time scales and not correlated to deposition. The chronostratigraphic time resolution in the Stirone growth strata are new paleogeodetic data that help bridge short-term geodetic and long-term geologic rates of crustal deformation.

Paleomagnetic, rock magnetic, and carbon isotope stratigraphies of the Ediacaran aged Johnnie Formation (Death Valley, USA) and the Wonoka Formation (Flinders Ranges, Australia) provide a robust chronostratigraphic framework for the Shuram carbon isotope excursion (SE). Competing hypotheses suggest the SE is either a major global ocean oxidation event preceding the evolution of metazoan life, or the product of diagenetic alteration of globally distributed sediments. Magnetostratigraphy shows the nadir of the excursion to be synchronous between the Death Valley and Australia locations, and an astrochronology gives a duration of approximately 9 Myr for each expression of the excursion. The geochronologic consistency of the excursion between these two localities makes a diagenetic source unlikely. The duration of the 13C depleted strata can be used to obtain a more robust estimate of the necessary dissolved organic carbon pool and amount of oxidants in the Ediacaran ocean-atmosphere system necessary to explain the Shuram Excursion.
