Remains of the Jews studies the rise of Christian Empire in late antiquity (300-550 C.E.) through the dense and complex manner in which Christian authors wrote about Jews in the charged space of the “holy land.” The book employs contemporary cultural studies, particularly postcolonial criticism, to read Christian writings about holy land Jews as colonial writings. These writings created a cultural context in which Christians viewed themselves as powerful—and in which, perhaps, Jews were able to construct a posture of resistance to this new Christian Empire. In the late fourth and early fifth centuries, during a fifty-year stretch sometimes dubbed a Pauline renaissance of the western church, six different authors produced over four dozen commentaries in Latin on Paul's epistles. Among them was Jerome, who commented on four epistles (Galatians, Ephesians, Titus, Philemon) in 386 after recently having relocated to Bethlehem from Rome. His commentaries occupy a time-honored place in the centuries-long tradition of Latin-language commenting on Paul's writings. They also constitute his first foray into the systematic exposition of whole biblical books (and his only experiment with Pauline interpretation on this scale), and so they provide precious insight into his intellectual development at a critical stage of his early career before he would go on to become the most prolific biblical scholar of Late Antiquity. This monograph provides the first book-length treatment of Jerome's opus Paulinum in any language. Adopting a cross-disciplinary approach, Cain comprehensively analyzes the commentaries' most salient aspects-from the inner workings of Jerome's philological method and engagement with his Greek exegetical sources, to his recruitment of Paul as an anachronistic surrogate for his own theological and ascetic special interests. The Christian Topography of Early Islamic Jerusalem: The Evidence of Willibald of Eichstatt (700-787 CE) is an analysis of Willibald's description of Jerusalem for the year 724-6, as contained in Hugeburc's Vita Willibaldi, a text composed in Heidenheim (Germany) in 778. The work makes a fresh examination of the Christian landscape of Early Islamic Jerusalem, while describing various aspects of the Byzantine and Crusader city. Willibald's account of the Holy City includes the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Church of Holy Sion, the pool of Bethesda, the Church of St Mary, the Church of the Agony and the Church of the Ascension. Particular attention is given to the monument of the Miraculous Healing (the legend of the Holy Cross), the portico of Solomon, the Jephonias Monument (the Dormition of Mary) and the Jerusalem circuit. At the same time, the work explores the religious imagination of Willibald, including his perceptions of the holy sites, his image of Jerusalem and his understanding of the Christian life. Willibald's image of the city as a far and distant place is supported by his attention to personal hardships and to his interactions with the 'pagan Saracens', while embedded within the tales of his oriental travels is his vision of the Christian life - whereas Willibald viewed the earthly life as a laborious journey, the Christian life was one of faithful perseverance. The work makes a significant contribution to two fields of study: the commemorative topography of Jerusalem and the Anglo-Saxon, or Boniface, mission in Germany.

This book provides the first comprehensive study of Jewish travel and mobility in Hellenistic and Roman times, based on a critical analysis of Jewish, Graeco-Roman, and early Christian literary, epigraphic, and archaeological sources and a social-historical evaluation of the material. Catherine Hezser shows that certain segments of ancient Jewish society were quite mobile. Mobility seems to have increased in the later Roman period, when an extensive road system facilitated travel within the province of Syria-Palestine and the neighbouring Middle Eastern regions. Second Temple Judaism was centralized, with Jerusalem as its central space and seat of priestly authority. In post-70 rabbinic Judaism, on the other hand, connections between rabbis could be established through mutual visits and second- and third-degree contacts only. Mobility formed the basis of the establishment of a decentralized rabbinic network in Palestine and Babylonia in late antiquity. Numerous narrative and halakhic traditions indicate the importance of mobility for communication and the exchange of knowledge amongst rabbis. It is argued that the rabbis who were most mobile sat at the nodal points of the rabbinic network and elicited the largest amount of influence. They would have combined business travel with scholarly exchange. Scholars' journeys between Palestine and Babylonia are viewed within the wider context of Rome and Persia's economic and cultural exchange in which Jews, just like Christians, may have played the role of intermediaries.
