Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative

Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative PDF Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309439981
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 587

Book Description
The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030594033
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
Implementing safety practices in healthcare saves lives and improves the quality of care: it is therefore vital to apply good clinical practices, such as the WHO surgical checklist, to adopt the most appropriate measures for the prevention of assistance-related risks, and to identify the potential ones using tools such as reporting & learning systems. The culture of safety in the care environment and of human factors influencing it should be developed from the beginning of medical studies and in the first years of professional practice, in order to have the maximum impact on clinicians' and nurses' behavior. Medical errors tend to vary with the level of proficiency and experience, and this must be taken into account in adverse events prevention. Human factors assume a decisive importance in resilient organizations, and an understanding of risk control and containment is fundamental for all medical and surgical specialties. This open access book offers recommendations and examples of how to improve patient safety by changing practices, introducing organizational and technological innovations, and creating effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care systems, in order to spread the quality and patient safety culture among the new generation of healthcare professionals, and is intended for residents and young professionals in different clinical specialties.

ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 148

Book Description
Compliance Issues in Ophthalmology deals with a topic becoming more prevalent in the vocabulary of health care regulation: compliance. As federal and state governments have increased their enforcement activity, it has become important for providers of health care to protect themselves from allegations of fraud and abuse. Physicians must first understand the applicable rules and regulations to ensure they are acting in accordance with them. The extensive experience accumulated by these contributors has enabled them to create the first publication aimed at identifying compliance issues in ophthalmic practice. Common coding, risk management, and legal issues pertinent to the field of ophthalmology are covered inside this unique text. Identification of these issues is the first step to avoiding the massive expense that may be incurred when a physician or provider is forced to defend his or her conduct. Compliance Issues in Ophthalmology is the first text to present these issues in a understandable format, clarifying to practitioners the often "cloudy" issues surrounding proper business conduct.
